deer-proof bumpers?
« on: December 14, 2014, 08:51:58 PM »
So I drive through deer infested highways at night a lot.  I feel it is just a matter of time before i smack one with my truck.  Way too many close calls to even guess at a number.  I would like to get a good solid bumper that will bolt onto my frame that will prevent my truck from getting messed up if (when)  I plow into a deer at 60 mph.  Much of my regular drive involves hours of dark, no cell service middle of nowhere driving.  I would hate to have my radiator or something wrecked by a deer head and not make it to work or even be able to call in.  Anybody have any first hand experience with a critter proof bumper that has saved the day for them?  Looking for suggestions from those who have been there.  Thanks

Homemade in my opinion.  So many of the bumpers fall short and are more about looks.  Particularly if you are looking for impact protection.

A hunting partner of mine several years ago brought his fancy new truck with a fancy stainless steel brush guard to elk camp, still had the paper plates in the window. One night him and another of our group head to town and on the way back on Highway 101 hit a deer at 60. When they got back to camp we wiped the blood off and pulled the ring around one of the headlights back a little where it was bent back and it was good as new. A few months later I bought a new truck and ordered the identical brush guard the next day. I hit my first deer a while back and it worked good, although I was able to get slowed down quite a bit before impact so I may have been ok anyway.

My Montana shooting buddy got a commercial fire/aid car bumper for his 2014 F350 Super Duty. He hit a Whitetail doe on the way to a Colorado Shoot and did $2,3OO damage to his front end it got between the bumper and grill and messed up the cooling system.

 :yeah:

If building your own is not an option, I would look at Ruenel. They are about as tough as you're going to get in a production bumper.

If I hadn't done home built... I was going to do a "Ranch Hand" brand bumper. They are in Texas and they are very well built in my opinion.
