Not the blacktail shed I was looking for
« on: January 28, 2015, 02:52:10 PM »
Spent about 3 hours Sunday checking beds on a steep steep hill - Nada.  Lots of sign and bumped a few deer, but no bones.

After working in the woods on Monday. decided to have a look around.  Only went about 100 yards before I almost stepped on this small 5 point.  It's not often I get lucky.  I should probably stop searching for sheds now and call it a season.  :)

Nice. What saw is that?  Bar looks tiny for the size of the powerhead :dunno:

The saw is a Stihl 211C that I bought for the express use of thinning the alder on this property I bought last month.  About 22 of the 26 acres are 15yo alder.  This is how I have fun while the kids are in school.  (it keeps me out of trouble anyway) Having done 11 acres of similar sized trees using a 18 lb. Husky 450 Rancher a few years ago, I decided to go with a much lighter saw.  I did have them put a 14 inch bar on it because none of the trees I'm thinning are bigger than about 7 - 8 inches, so right or wrong, less weight means more work done before I poop out.  I'm really happy with the saw.

I didn't measure the shed, but based on the pic, I'm guessing it's only about 28 - 30 inches in length.

Here's another pic of the saw.  Ignore the tree behind it.  That (and hundreds of similar trees) had nothing to do with me deciding to buy the property.  ;)

I hear you on the saw they get heavy after a while. I have quite a few and love my small one the most. Jealous of the elk shed, have found lots of deer but never an elk one.
