Rage broad heads quality

I was pretty excited to try some rage broad heads this year so I picked up a pack of the orange extreme 125 grainers. Shot the practice head and my fixed blade heads this am to make sure I am good for hunting coming up and all was well. When I went home I decided to assemble my arrows for hunting. I am not at all impressed with the rage quality at this point. Thee was only one decently straight head in the pack of 3. The other 2 were not even close. I went through 17 arrows to get them decently close and then was able to tweet them to get them acceptable by spinning and then pushing on the top slightly. I am concerned with how easy these were to slightly bend in the arrow just by pushing sideways on the tip. As far as I am concerned these will be single use heads and I will not be buying any more rage heads. I know the straightness was not an arrow issue because both some old muzzies and my new savor a heads all spun on all but an arrow or 2.
Just wanted to share my review so far and that I am not at all happy with them so far.
I'll send one through a deer. But that won't change my mind.

I  decided to go with the rage  broad heads this year, the practice tip fly exactly like my field points with tight groups, these things slice  a 2" cut in a critter, I went with the 100 grainers, I will let you know how they work in September

You wouldn't happen to be shooting GoldTip inserts, would you?

Most ferrules that appear to bend easily with side pressure on the tip aren't really bending.  They are just shifting within the insert.  If the insert is on the max dimension of AMO standards and is not perfectly flush on it's face the ferrule will appear bent even though it is not.  Broadhead collars that are stamped or molded instead of turned usually force this problem as well.  This is one of the reasons I use Easton inserts or my own inserts when using Carbon Express shafts.  Both GoldTip and Carbon Express have rather poor inserts.  GoldTip having the worst I've seen since Satellite made inserts back in the late 80's and early 90's.  Some bad enough even our Titanium Signature heads won't spin perfectly without a lot of work.

A few wraps of Teflon plumbers tape around the parallel section of the ferrule between the threads and the main ferrule body will usually true up those crooked spinning heads.  It fills in that gap between the junky $0.18 inserts and the alignment part of the ferrule.  You will likely be happier with your Rage heads if you give it a try.


Interesting you have 125 grain X-Treme orange.  I didn't realize Rage was making the X-Treme in a 125 grain.  I thought the only orange 125 available was in the X-Blade Crossbow ferrule.  Guess I need to get a new catalog and freshen up on my Rage knowledge.

Your good rad. I am using carbon express inserts. Maybe it could be the inserts but these same arrows spun true easily with shuttle t heads and your ti con heads screwed right in and were perfect.

You are also right about the orange heads being crossbow heads. I didn't realize when I bought them. I found info from rage that they are the same, they are a 2 inch cut. The blades are just slightly swept back. Looking back I wish I would have gotten hypodermics. I have just never had this much trouble aligning broad heads.

I also bought some hypodermics, cant bring myself to use them on elk though, maybe deer, maybe not.

Our TiCon collars are turned on a $400K CNC Swiss machine.  Not sure about Shuttle T now but they used to be cut with extreme precision too.  And while the Shock Collar that Rage uses is of high quality it is still molded.  And the way it is held in place by the ferrule and the insert there is not a lot of bearing surface to keep it square.  Doesn't take much to get them to wiggle.

Only real difference between a crossbow broadhead and a standard arrow broadhead is the diameter of the collar.  Crossbow bolts are usually 22/64 in diameter.  So rather large by todays standards.  Using a large diameter ferrule on an arrow is of little consequence.  Some actually claim they penetrate better by eliminating drag on the shaft.  So I wouldn't be too concerned about them being called X-Blade or X-Bow heads.  All work the same.

You might also try putting one of your Shuttle-T collars behind the Shock collar.  Might help everything seat just a little better.

The other thing is to add maybe three wraps of that Teflon tape and be sure to add it to the threads as well.  With the tape you don't need to screw the head on the shaft as tightly as it will stop it from rattling loose.  Then screw the ferrule on just snug enough to hold firm and see how it spins.  I'd bet most, if not all, your alignment issues will go away.

I have been playing with the hypodermics a bunch the last couple months.
They feruls have held up well and all still spin true. the blades do pretty good, I have bent one blade shooting into gravel.
The blade angle is pretty steep so I am thinking these will just be for deer this year.
I am pretty sure all the other rages are aluminum feruls. It sucks they are so dang expensive, and very well will be one and done.
