Question for you Blacktail studs!
« on: September 25, 2015, 08:07:50 AM »
Do Blacktail does "wheeze"?  Twice this week I was in jack firs and crossed paths with a doe, she crossed and another deer in the thick stuff didn't, I never seen the 2nd deer either time, but they both were letting out a very audible "wheeze"/"huff".  So I was wondering if both does and bucks make that sound or just bucks?  I mostly hunt elk, so Iam not versed in blacktails as much as I should be.   Thanks for your thoughts!

Definitely!  Not as often as whitetail, but they definitely do!

The only experience I've had is with bucks doing it, but the other people on here probably have more in depth knowledge

I only knew for certain that does did it. Figured bucks probably did too but never actually seen a buck doing it. Often I hear blacktails "blowing" (that's what I call it) but don't see them. It seems to be usually when they smell me.

Yes, does do the snort also. I'm only answering so that you guys will think I'm a Blacktail stud. I really don't know anything.

Yes, does will wheeze. I've had them come in to a fawn in distress call, then stomp all around wheezing.

Are you referring to blowing? Does do NOT wheeze! Wheezing and blowing are two totally different sounds.
Blowing is what deer do when they are alarmed and are alerting other deer to danger. Wheezing is a buck picking a fight.

Yup. I just figured he meant blowing. As that is what his description sounded like.
