Wild Steelhead ... Poached???
« on: January 17, 2009, 04:54:04 PM »
I got this from Bearhunter59, he asked me to post the pics, cuase he couldn't at the time...

Today a total of 12 WILD steelhead carcasses that were laying on the shore at the Soos Creek boat takeout "Green River" at the Auburn Black Diamond bridge just off of Hwy 18.  They had their sides filleted off of them, but the eggs weren't taken.  I called the WDFW and the officer said he'd stop by later and look at it, but there wasn't anything else he was going to do about it.  He thinks maybe the tribals caught them in nets down lower on the river and brough them up here to fillet.  Doesn't sound very logical to me...seems like it was probably someone that illegally netted the fish right there and fillet them right there...

Im working on a website and am looking for material about the tribes and incidents like this.  If you can get permission to use the photos on the internet please let me know.  I understand that we dont particularly know WHO did this, but SOMEONE did this and is unacceptable.  It is WILD STEELHEAD that have been killed.
You can pm me with any information you have about the pics.

THanks

my pics, and you can post as you see fit.  I know I was fit to be tied when I saw it.  Man, it just sucks...everyone of them was wild.  not a clipped fin in the bunch.  They looked like they had been laying there for a while, maybe a day at the most though.  I've been out of town for most of the week, and I was just stopping by there, to see how high the water was, on my way back from stopping at the tackle shop.  I was thinking if it wasn't too high, i'd give it a shot tomorrow.  But, it looks too high for my liking.  Anyway, there really isn't much the gamie is going to be able to do anyway.  Not much to go on.

Aint no whity poaching that many natives without a gill net. And that would be pretty tough given the location of the lower Green. Given the white translucent fins there fresh out of salt.
Caught in a tribal net, which is legal, taken home, filleted, and taken back to dispose of the bodies. (In a crappy blatent manner I might add)

The Dorsals that are ledgible are clearly pen raised with there stooped over appearance. Many, many hatchery fish are missed or miss clipped.

Still sucks that they are laying there and not in the water were all can see. But at least they brought em back so the nutrients can help feed the smolts and such.

I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me to.

We use to see dump truck loads exactly like that dumped up on the Skokomish River. The piles would be 3-4 ft tall and 20 ft  in diameter. You could smell them from 1/4 mile down river. They all came from the nets.
