2015 Opening Weekend Buck
«

October 19, 2015, 07:40:57 AM »
I had a late Palouse tag this year, so when I took off to deer camp my intention was hanging out with my Dad, Uncle, Gpa, and brother and enjoy a weekend in the woods. Saturday I sat in my spot, a draw over from my grandpa, saw some deer, one legal buck, but nothing I was going to shoot. The weather was warm and it was pretty anticlimactic throughout the rest of the day. We woke up Sunday to a lot more clouds and cooler temps, and Gpa and I started hiking in to our spots. It was his birthday so I was hoping he’d knock one down. We got settled in around 8 and I had a couple does below me feeding, then the rain started. About an hour later I was startled by a shot that could have only come from my Gpa. I glassed him and saw him looking through the binos trying to spot whatever he had shot. I called him on the radio but I didn’t get an answer. About 5 minutes later 3 deer came running out into the clearing I was watching, I threw the binos up and saw the first 2 were does, but the last one was a 4x4. I took another second to check him out and knew he was prolly a little bigger than anything I have killed so I settled in and waited for a shot. He was nose deep on a doe the whole way across the clearing and when he finally stopped he was about 200 yards away straight downhill. I put the reticle at the bottom of his body, right behind the shoulder, and boom. He dropped! All I could think was, “I guess no whitetails for me this year.” I hiked down and located the body then called my grandpa on the radio. He said he dumped his buck too and was walking down to it! So I left mine and hiked over to him to help. My dad and uncle came over before too long and we got everything cleaned up and finally packed out. Took about 6 hours, and it never stopped raining. By the end I was wetter than I have ever been. As always with hunting it didn’t go as I expected, but I wouldn’t change anything. Shooting a buck on the same day as my Gpa and it being his 77th birthday was as cool as its going to get, not to mention the time spent with my dad brother and uncle. The buck is a beaut, and my biggest, but the time with my family is what it’s all about. Now on to Wenaha for elk!!

Holy moly. This buck has everything you'd want. Great story too with Gramps taking a buck as well. Congrats

Great buck! And even greater that you and your grandpa both got one on his birthday.

Congrats, I would not have been able to pass that guy up either.
Way to get it done.
