Squirrel Hunting legal or not
« on: January 24, 2009, 07:59:17 AM »
 Hey guys,

I just bought a Ruger 10/22 and frequent the woods of kitsap county, belfair and over the hood canal bridge.  I don't ever remember seeing if they are legal to hunt or not.  Is there a season and bag limit?  My plan was to bring the 22 along while I was scouting for deer season.

Thanks Pete

Only the Eastern gray squirrel is legal.  No bag limit or season on those.

There is a thread on here about this somewhere, there are a few different squirrels that you can shoot in this state.

I live in Kitsap as well. . .just outside of Silverdale off of Newberry Hill. . .the only place that I regularly see squirrels is at Olympic College!!!

If you do find/see some squirrels while you are out you will be VERY happy with the 10/22. . .I have had one since the 8th grade and they are dead nuts accurate and VERY reliable as long as you don't try to use sub-sonic ammo (not enough pressure to cycle the bolt all the way back and the gun won't fully chamber the next round. . .you can lighten the bolt and it will cycle sub-sonic though if that's what you wanna do) or CCI Stingers (the case on a stinger is longer than "normal" .22LR ammo and therefore may or may not eject properly from a semi-auto. . .when I tried using Stingers the case usually ended up getting caught by the bolt when it was trying to chamber the next round). . .other than that I have NEVER had any sort of problem with my 10/22!!!

Good Luck!!!

Good luck with the squirrel hunting.  My buddy shot and cooked up some squirrel wrapped in bacon.  One word, "heavenly" but anything wrapped in bacon is pretty good.
