Herring jigs

Does anyone go out and jig for fresh herring ? I think we get up to 10 lbs a day, I think, haven't looks in the regs, I know we can't commercial net them. If anyone jigs for them or has any tips for a novice , maybe a pic of your set ups and don't mind sharing the info that would be kick arse, thanks

There are commercially made herring jigs. They have 6-10 little hooks inline with each other about 1' apart. Cruse around in your boat and find the hearing balls and send it down. If your near a canary go jig in front of where the waste tube goes into the bay. The ground up fish parts attract them well.

Pretty easy.  Gamakatsu Herring rig, size 5 - 1 oz weight - drop it into  a bait ball - catch 3 to 5 at time.

You’ll find herring feeding on the surface in the early morning.  They feed on the weed lines, look for small dimpling and flashes on the surface or birds feeding on them.  Once the sun hits the water they go deep and they are harder to catch.

You know when your out trolling for salmon and you see herring jumping can you cast to them like fishing for bass? Might brake up the slow times while waiting for a salmon to bite?

I keep a rod rigged and ready to do just that.  You are allowed and extra rod if you using it to jig bait.  and there is nothing better than fresh herring for catching salmon.

Awesome cp, thanks for the info, I use a lot of fresh squid and when we were fishn yesterday I watched herring jumpn all over and thought it would be a great way to break up the time.. Again thanks

This is how I do it and throw them in the live well.  I pin them on to use for lings.

Not sure on that. We will go catch our bait for a week of fishing at canneries in SW Alaska.

I used to get a mixture of smelt and herring when using jigs up on Whidbey Island in the winter smelt jigging time.
