Looks like no tail, my brother shot a nice Sitka Blacktail years ago that did not have a tail very odd looking.

Hmmm, I love a conundrum.

Probably a blacktail, but you need to factor in how close you are to Cathlamet to determine whether it might possibly be whitetail.  The doe in the background appears to be a twin, and shows a similar suggestion of some kind of black vestigial tail - perhaps just a few black hairs instead of an actual tail.  Though the views should show it, I cannot visualize the metatarsal glands, which would provide a big clue in determining the species.  My initial take on the shape of the head on the doe in the background is whitetail though.  Very cool (and interesting).

If you google "tailless deer" and look at images, you'll find that deer without tails are apparently not too uncommon, based on the number of photos I glanced at.

I jumped a doe with two fawns along the Cowlitz this weekend that I'm convinced were Whitetails. The fawns tails had 0 black on them, all brown and longer than normal. Only saw them for a few seconds though so hard to know for sure.

I have to say whitetail. The underbelly looks light, not dark like a blacktail.

But the first picture looks like the deer in the background has a black-tail
