New bow at Cabela's
« on: December 31, 2016, 12:03:25 PM »
Never shot a bow but looking to get into it. Does anyone have any experiences with a bow from Cabela's. I know everyone says to stay away and go to an archery shop but I have $500 and something in gift cards for Cabela's. Are the packages good or is it better to buy a bare bow and buy everything else separate?

I bought a Cabela's branded ready to shoot package because I didn't know any better, still regret that.

If you have a press and very knowledgeable about bows then by all means get a Cabela's bow, but if you were you wouldn't be asking this question.....

Spend the $500 on cube targets, case for the bow etc, but get the bow at a reputable shop that'll help you tune and shoot.

The packages will get you started and shooting, but you will want to upgrade things sooner than later. Just buying a bow from cabelas isn't a bad thing l, but I would reccomend taking it to an archery shop to ensure that it is set up correctly and fits you. They will more than likely charge for this service since you didn't buy the bow with them.
If you have the money to pay with cash it may pay to look at archery shops also, but if your gift cards are all you can use then by all means buy from cabelas.  :twocents:

Not naming any establishments but be ready to be put behind their customers and do a lot of sitting and waiting around while they ignore you.

Like anything else there are good shops and bad shops.

Cabelas brand bows are made by Bowtech, so there's certainly nothing wrong with them. Getting a package will get you out shooting, and you can change components as you develop, if you want to change them. You always hear about the person who they made a mistake on, but you don't hear from the 15 that are satisfied. There are plenty of hacks working at archery shops, too.

Buy yourself a bare bow with your 500.00 and get upgraded sight and rest. Join Cedar River Bowmen in Enumclaw, I see you are in Buckley. There are seveeal of us that can get you set up and shooting.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned buying a used high end bow fully set up that's a few years old? That'd definately be my recommendation.

I wouldnt buy the bow the bow there.  Maybe the sight, rest, broadheads and arrows but their bow suck if you value the opinion of someone who has shot one.

I have taken my bow into Cabelas a few times to have them mess with it, always been satisfied.  If you have the gift cards already I wouldnt hesitate to get one from there.  Go in there and shoot a bunch off them and walk out with the one you like.  $500 is more than enough to get you started.  Make an afternoon of it and have fun!

I'm with MtnMuley. Keep an eye out on offerup, the posts get taken down really quick so you gotta keep checking back but that's definitely the best way to get the most bang for your buck and set yourself up for success. Do your research first so you know what you're looking for.

Can cabelas order different brand bows for you as a special order? Always wondered since I have lots of points. Can they get you say a new Matthews or a Hoyt?

I don't think Cabelas is authorized to sell Hoyt or Matthews

You will spend 500 pretty quick . I'd look for a good used bow with adjustable  draw length.  Bow tech fits the bill and rock creek in Enumclaw  services them. Cabellas sells quad rests which are great and Scott releases and so good sights . Buying a high end used bow will be worth your time rather than going in and buying a package deal there.

If you are set on spending that $500 in gift cards on a bow, here is what I would do...

Buy the Cabelas Credence package on sale $399.99

Buy the Trophy Taker XFC drop away $79.99 way better than what you get with the package and worth the upgrade $

Buy half dozen arrows $50

Tax out the door $580ish and you will be good until you decide wether or not you like the archery thing or not. At that point sell it and use that money on your upgrade bow.
