St. Helens winterkill

Sun came out yesterday and I headed up the Hwy to Coldwater.  Just casually watching the ditches saw three winterkill--Didn't get out to check for hoof rot.  Wonder how overall the herd survived all that snow and disease.  Yard elk are limping, and yard deer are getting hit with hairloss, too.  Surrounded by sick critters in SW Wa.  Bring on the sun!

How can you assume a animal in a ditch is "winterkill"? Because it was killed in the season of winter ?

OK, more technically the three elk were on the grassy right-of-way dead about 20-50 feet from the pavement.  Highly unlikely that any were hit by a vehicle...and THREE hit all within the last week or so, no way.

There's a pile of dead ones up there .....not even going up there this year....it's gross

In the past 2-months, I've found a total of (13) dead elk in the Toutle and Coweeman units. Out of the (13), (9) were cows, and the others were bulls.

Out of those animals, (11) were imancipated and had hoof extreme hoof rot. The others were in poor condition, but no apprenent injuries. One of the bulls, was most definatly killed by coyotes. The blood in the snow showed he was attacked multiple times, until sucomming to the attack.

On another note, I did find deer from a cat kill.

Are you sure it was coyotes cause rumor has it there is wolves in them there parts

They die in bunches up there every year.

In the early 1900s, elk were enslaved. Thank goodness they were recently imancipated. :tup:
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.
