Elk calling and a sore tongue
« on: June 16, 2017, 10:56:56 PM »
Anyone else get a sore tongue while learning to call elk with a mouth reed? Last few weeks I earned a sore spot on the bottom of the tip of my tongue while practicing with the Elk Nut app (cool app, btw), and this week I'm working up a blister on my tongue top from trying to imitate the boys at Angry Spike. Do I have to grow tongue calluses, or am I doing something wrong?

I never have? But I have also been using them since I was a lil kid. It could be just because you are first time user? But I also know a guy that is allergic to latex?

Not my tongue, but some calls make my palate sore when they have the hard plastic on the backside.

Sounds like you have either a double or triple latex reed & your tongue isn't use to it or you're trying to imitate some very coarse bugles & you're not used to that as well? What sound are you working on, Lip Bawls or something similar?

Thanks for the feedback to all who replied. I am a relative newbie at using a mouth reed for bull sounds. Most of my practice right now is with the golden dome reed from Glenn Berry. It is a double reed. I really like the sounds that I am getting, but when I go for the highest pitched calls at high volume, it does a number on my tongue. I guess I will limit my bull practice to 10 minute sessions, to give time for my tongue to toughen up.

There are some good videos to learn how you should sound on youtube.  Look up some of Corey Jacobson and Joel Turner (Ironmind).  Otherwise no reason I know that your tongue would get all worn out.
