Quality Elk Little Naches
« on: July 06, 2017, 04:20:31 PM »
Dad drew quality elk for Little Naches Sept. 30 - Oct 8. Was wondering if anybody who has experience hunting this time of year could tell me if the bulls are still active/vocal? I understand there are many factors to this. Pretty excited as it almost feels as if I drew it. Want to give it our all as this may be his last shot at a decent bull on the east side. Thanks for any info.

You will not be short of help from this group of guys, can you dad hike much?  I have a good place and if he can't hike, he can pay to have horses take him up and get the meat out. He should very well get his bull!  My wife had this tag but for the white river which boarders that unit, lots of pressure to get it done and only 5 days to do it.  you guys will have a blast.

Oh yeah, theyre singing loud and clear still. That's a great team period for your tag.

Plenty of help, if needed, just ask. Should take at least a day or two to locate some bulls.

Yeah, he will hike his butt off with the best of them. We've been hunting the same area in Little Naches for 30 plus years. Just have not been able to spend time up there between Labor Day and the general modern fire arm season in the past. Thanks.

I have said it before and will keep saying it.  I think the muzzy elk season is the absolute best season there is.  I love archery and that is a great season as well but muzzy elk is the #1 season in my mind for timing.

Yea, they are still talking during that period. Called in this bull a couple years ago for a buddy who had the rifle tag for te same time. Was the 5th bull we called inand he decided to take it.

I have to say I'm stoked to have the muzzy tag going on at the same time. There will be 43 total tag holders running around chasing bulls in 346 and 336...33 muzzy guys and 10 rifle guys.

I have been doing some scouting in the area. I have seen a lot of elk sign. Have 1 cam and 2 more getting ready to go in.

I'm grateful for this opportunity to chase elk at the tail end of the rut and for there to be so few people in the woods. We are just after the archery guys and we get like 6 days before the muzzy guys come in! Can't wait to hear some stories and see some trail cam photos. I only have a couple spikes and a ton of cows on cam right now, so nothing special from me.

Good luck!!
Wishing I was fishing...or in Wyoming

The nice thing about muzzy season is you can use your bow if you want.  I'm hunting with my old group this year.  They wanted to try muzzy this year.  I don't have one, but will bring my bow.  Should be fun hunting with them again!  We drew the Observatory muzzy tag.  We put in for a party of 4.  Will be trying the northern part of Manastash by Taneum creek (near the 3120 road).

I'll likely be scouting the weekend of your opener for my later tag.  PM me if you want a phone number in case you need help packing it out.

that is such a good tag! You're going to hear bugles every 5 minutes for the first two hours in the morning and bugles every five minutes the last two hours of every evening you will see bulls every single day.  best tag in WA. good pull!

My brother had this tag three years ago. We were surprised by the amount of people in the unit even though there were only about 50 permits. The elk were vocal and fairly easy to locate - My brother filled his tag on the second morning with a nice 6x6 so we were out fairly quickly. Once we had the elk hanging we had lots of visitors in camp and most of the people we met that had permits were unfamiliar with the area, hadn't scouted and were sticking close to the road systems. I had hunted the Little Naches for 20 years and had scouted several times during September prior to the hunt so we had a lot of backup plans if we got crowded or didn't find elk where we expected. He ended up getting the elk less than a half mile from my tent. Also it was 85 degrees when I set up camp three days before the hunt and it snowed on us the morning he got the bull so the weather can be a bit unpredictable at that time of year. You'll have a fun hunt and I look forward to seeing your post with pictures of your bull.
