2018 Youth season, first timers
« on: March 04, 2018, 03:53:21 PM »
My kids (9 & 15) decided they want to go turkey hunting - great news for me.  We have shotguns, OnX maps, camo and are looking at staying the weekend in Colville.  We are also signed up for two turkey clinics and I can watch plenty of YouTubes in the near future.

What I am wondering is if I pull up a map of Coleville and look at the public land within say 40 minutes of town and pick a few spots, would we have any chance of running into a turkey?  I know how to scout for deer & elk, but have no idea of what to look for in turkey country.

Any advice on what type of habitat to look for?  Near streams, open places, wooded places, flat, mountainside, I really have no idea where to start.

What clinics you going to?  Look for the roost when scouting that would be a good start.   Good open branch trees.  South facing slopes.   Talk with some locals around there.   If you go out early with the kids and knock on some doors you may also get access to some private land.  Good luck.

We're signed up for the one at MRC, I think you are teaching it?  I think there is also one at Cabelas, I have to check my calendar.

I figure worst case, we'll have a great weekend out with some quality time and maybe even double duty scout for deer.

People who won't let adults hunt their land are also positively predisposed to letting kids hunt quite often.   At least that has been my experience.

Do some leg work with landowners asking for youth hunt access only. I had great luck getting access for youth.

Have fun!

If Im in a turkey area I just stop every 1/3 mile and give a couple squawks on the chock box.  You should get an answer if there is anything around.  Much better chance of locating by sound than vision.

Spring looks to be getting a slow start this year in the NE corner, I would expect muddy roads and sugary snow in the shady areas.

I hope the roads don't get to rutted up this year.

YJ  Guide service is having a 300$ kiddo Turkey unguided special. Would be good investment for sure.

Thanks, that's tempting.  Only problem is that with two kids, gas, hotel and tags it's a bit more than we have budgeted.
