Meat troubles
« on: July 25, 2018, 03:02:32 AM »
My wife has a kitchenaid, and she wants me to buy the meat grinder attachment as opposed to a stand alone unit.  but it seems cheap and foregin to me.  does anyone have any experience with this?

The kitchenaid grinder attachment is the only grinder I have used, and I have put around 10 animals through it.  When we have multiple deer or elk to grind we usually fire up two kitchenaids to cut down on grind time.

Will do it but it will be slow going.  I would buy a min 3/4 - 1 hp stand alone unit if your doing more than one deer a year.

I have one and have ground deer and elk with it. As said it is slow and it will plug the plate with silver skin often and need to be cleaned.
It is a great rig for doing small amounts. I would recommend it if you need to grind a few clams or something like that but if you plan on  butchering deer and elk I think you should shoot a little higher.
Also I find it somewhat difficult to clean.

X10

It works but it’s very slow compared to a good stand alone. I do 4-10 animals a year and the amount of time I saved after switching is huge.

I made the switch from the kitchen aid attachment to a stand alone grinder a few years ago. It is much easier and faster!

Any recommendations on a make and model of grinder you guys are happy with? Also, do you guys make your own sausage and pepper sticks with it?

My wife has a kitchenaid and we have had this same conversation.

I've used the Kitchenaid grinder attachment to grind burger from several deer, an elk 1/4 and one bear.  Well-trimmed meat cut to 1/2-1" strips, I can grind around 10lbs an hour so 1-2 hours for grind from an average animal.  I find it is a good pairing with my wimpy vacuum sealer, as after a few packages it needs to cool down anyway.

For multiple animals or elk size or larger, I borrow my buddy's 2hp grinder - no trimming required except to remove what you don't want in your burger.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

I bought a different all stainless grinder attachment built for kitchenaid. http://smokehousechef.com/ has the unit. All parts go in the dishwasher and heavy duty. Works great so far for my beef and pork.

I have a mid grade cabelas  - it eats the meat and never gets plugged.  I do 2-3 deer an elk or two a year sometimes more.   and save all the grind and do it all at once.  If you just do the grind of one deer and not every year then what you have will suffice.  If more than industrial is the way to go.

Thanks guys. That seals the deal. I'm going with the kitchen aid attachment and spend the rest of the money i'd spend on the stand alone grinder to get a stash of the blue diamonds :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

They must be hit and miss...I would never try to grind more than 5 pounds with my kitchen aid.  My Cabelas 1hp with foot pedal, I can do as much meat as fast as I can feed it!

I've got one in the closet that I don't use anymore because we got rid of the kitchenaid. If anybody is interested to purchase it, just PM a reasonable price and I can send it to you.

I hate unresolved forum questions so I'm here to fix that.  I got the kitchenaid meat grinder and it works like a charm.  It pounds through sausages like a lady of the night on payday.  Thanks for all the pro tips.

I will never look at my kitchenaid the same way again  :chuckle:
To hunt and butcher an animal is to recognize that meat is not some abstract form of protein that springs into existence tightly wrapped in cellophane and styrofoam.
