JetBoil and Coffee
« on: October 24, 2018, 10:13:33 AM »
I just picked up a Jetboil and coffee press.  Anyone have any tips or coffees they prefer?  Good grounds to water ratio?  I have watched a couple of the videos online, but was wondering about any of your first hand experiences as well.

If you are using the French press attachment I use 2 slightly heaping tablespoons. My new favorite coffee in this has become the folgers singles. I've tried lots of different instants but I really like these the best. No grounds mess afterwards either.

Please don't ban me from the site for saying what I am about to say..... :chuckle: :chuckle:!!

The best instant coffee I have found hands down is.......starbucks via.  I know....I am supporting an anti gun liberal thug!!!   :bash: :bash: :bash:  I should be banned....but it is absolutely delicious and no press needed.  Easy to pack, taste great and cut weight with no press needed.

Now if you want to press coffee make sure you are getting a little bit more coarse grind so it does not clog the press.  Pressed coffee with any quality bean is great.  I persanally do not like the press that goes with the jetboil as it makes a mess and quite often I end up with cowboy coffee....grinds and all.  If you are using for a base camp item buy a better press.   :twocents:

I apologize for my ignorance, because i feel like this is a stupid question.  With the coffee press I can use any ground coffee I want correct?  It doesnt need to be instant?

Yup, any ground coffee will work.

Dark Timber all the way.  I like it so much I use it in my drip pot at home.  I cant even look at a vias anymore.  Plus Tony from DT is a great guy, local washington boy, gives a percentage of each purchase to conservation, and is a site member.

Starbucks is fine stuff ... as long as you like your beans burnt!  :chuckle: personally I don’t put too much into when hunting the Folgers singles are fine or cafe bustello singles. At home lavazza is the best and Torrefazione was the best before Starbucks bought them out.

If I'm hunting I go with instant coffee to save time in the morning. Ht. Hagen organic is the best I've tried (i think i was turned onto it thanks to a different coffee thread on this forum). If I'm recreational backpacking and not rushed for time then I use the jetboil/french press. Any ground coffee works. I like mine strong so I do like 2 cups of water and at least a 1/2 cup ground coffee. I bring it to a light rolling boil too for a couple minutes which is very hard to do without it boiling over. Some claim that it will burn the coffee but I've never had any complaints.

This might sound stupid, but also make sure your press is oriented the correct direction. I know guys who had theirs upside down and then couldn't figure out why they had some many grounds in their coffee!

This probably won't fly for most of you coffee snobs, but I tried the Safeway Select Organic instant coffee last week and I found it to be surprisingly good! Not burnt like the Starbucks Vias stuff. I was really impressed. This coming from a self proclaimed coffee snob.

I use a Melitta pour over one cup and #2 filters. Best coffee around and easy peasy.

:twocents:

Im with ya. The SB vias are like crack and I cant help but buy them over anything else even though SB hates guns and the vias are 2X expensive that other instant coffees. Im weak...

Safeway has their own version that I get. I think it is pretty similar to the SB Via I used to buy, though I have not compared them side by side.

Yeah I think I have bought them at Walmart or Freddies  in the past.  I have been going with Cafe bustello for awhile now, but on my way out last week I picked up a box of Folgers singles at Safeway in Cle Elum.  Not sure if all Safeways will carry them though, some retailers will not carry evrything the same from store to store as some items will be dropped from the set if it is small.

Most stores will special order them for you even if they don’t have them in their set. Sometimes they will cut them in and others will ask you to purchase the whole case.

I'll chime in on the Jet Boil coffee press ... I press all my coffee, but found this unit to fall short when a little tighter fit would have been great! Might just be my style, but constantly wound up with so many grinds, I might has just as well done a pour and stir. Ultimately, I found some cheese cloth in my pack and used that to assist filtration.

For the instant guys: Try Pampa instant from Walmart, best instant coffee I've found and it's all of $1.27 for the small jar.  I introduced my buddy to this coffee on our Wyoming hunt and he didn't touch his Starbucks Vias the rest of the trip.

took the jetboil and coffee press out this weekend and it was great!  No grounds, and had delicious, warm, coffee while i stared at a hillside that was completely uninhabited by anything with four legs.

I have an MSR Windburner stove and it is like a JETBOIL. Here is a tip of what not to do. DO NOT put the water and grounds in and then place the little french press filter on the top. It will boil, create pressure, and explode boiling hot coffee and water all over your face, wall tent, sleeping bag, pillow, and whatever else. I mean, i would never do that I just heard about it from a guy........... :bash: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Boil the water alone and add the coffee later. It seems like I should have known that but i had a momentary laps of judgment and it created a very good laugh!

I never realized that many people pressed coffee let alone while hunting. Can’t judge though, do whatever it takes to get your caffeine and get moving

Get up, Leave camp, have a Via after first light while spotting.   Follow with instant oatmeal.  Simple, quick.

I never realized that many people pressed coffee let alone while hunting. Can’t judge though, do whatever it takes to get your caffeine and get moving
I went back to instant got tired of messing with it.

I did too. I just had the set up in my tote and we were at our base camp. Coffee press seemed like a good idea at the time LOL. I dont care to bring it into the back country though because I have to carry in grounds and it is messy and inconvenient.

:yeah: And did you know you can pour hot water directly into the instant oatmeal packet and it will turn out just the same.  no clean up necessary (it works for quaker instant at least)

Edit: Upon further research I found I was using the press incorrect and needed to turn the tines downward against the push (somewhat opposite of a stainless plunger). Also give them a little spread out for full contact if the tines might have compressed some from storage.

We've gotten spoiled. Remember drinking cowboy coffee? Most of the grounds would settle until you got to the bottom of the pot. Always tasted great at camp.

Here’s the setup I used hunting blacktail last weekend (shot and missed). I use the aero press instead of a coffee press. It’s a little smaller and IMO makes a cleaner cup. I also don’t have a French press. For the aero press, you want a medium or medium-fine grind. It will be a minute or two quicker than the press since you don’t have to wait for it to steep. I’ve found that Trader Joe’s has consistently good coffee without being too expensive.
