Griffons
« on: February 02, 2019, 12:33:54 AM »
Anyone know of a quality, Birdy griffon breeder in WA? Live in Monroe but would travel to Idaho/oregon if need be.

Would be my third bird dog. Not in any real hurry. Want to find a dog with good health history and hunting ability.

Any suggestions?
The deer are exactly where you find them, and no where you dont!

I got mine from Idaho Wells Griffons in Caldwell, ID about 5 1/2 years ago and she’s a great hunter with a strong natural drive.

She went gun shy about 2 seasons ago after getting hit by a shotgun wad though and I’m still working to get her back out hunting.

We just picked up our new griff 3 weeks ago from Wayfarer kennels in western MT. The drive wasn't a lot further than parts of Oregon or Idaho.

The parents were NAVHDA tested and scored well. She is already good with basic obedience and getting steadier with her retrieves every day. All signs point to a good hunter in the future (mostly waterfowl, but upland too). I know they have at least 2 pups left from this litter. During my search for a breeder, I connected with Phil Matteson at Cascade Kennels in MT.  He is committed to producing quality hunting dogs. His website is very informative and he was generous with his time. If I didn't have a personal referral for Wayfarer and they didn't already have pups on the ground, I would have waited for a dog from Cascade.

Feel free to pm with your email or phone for more info or pics

I've got a pup from Wayfarer's as well, Double R litter.

To the OP, I'd look pretty hard at Frank's dogs from Hun Hill Kennel in Idaho.  If you're willing to travel, or want to ship a dog, you open up a lot of good possibilities with breeders in the Midwest.

Before she moved to AZ I used to do regular group training sessions with a woman I considered to be the most knowledgeable person I knew when it came to griffs. I think she had 3-4 of them at the time. Great dogs!

It was largely due to that experience that my girlfriend wanted to get one. She did what she thought was due diligence in researching breeders and ended up with one from a breeder in Idaho.
It wasn’t too long after that the health issues started popping up. Ears, urinary problems, behavior issues (he was well socialized along w my older Brittany)

When the issues got worse as he got older, we checked in with the breeder only to learn that their claims of “being very selective “ breeders (before we got the pup!), were total bs. From what we could see, they were cranking out as many pups as fast as their poor dogs could produce them. Sad.
It wasn’t any of the breeders listed above and I’m not going to post their name here, but will gladly share it via pm.

Finn’s got some real issues but we love him and wouldn’t trade him for anything!
But I sure wouldn’t get a pup from those folks.

I am aware that you need to attend to their ears or there can problems.
Realizing that every individual is different with different backgrounds, I would be interested in hearing more about Finns behavioral issues. Care to elaborate?

Can we do a group buy ??? Cause I'm trying to find the perfect griff myself.  Trying to avoid driving to Idaho. For some reason there is so many breeders there and none in Washington

Why get a Griffon get a black lab if you want a hunting dog. A gun shy hunting dog is about as worthless as tits on bore.

Why do you think griffons are gun shy? Mine is, but that’s because of a very specific incident. She’s still a very capable hunting dog but I choose not to force her to be around gun shots because I can see how they affect her.
