Sucks that one of the tags will go un-used.  With how few they allotted it just makes the issue worse.
They really need a second draw for tags that won't be used.
OR
Let the guy who drew 2 tags harvest 2 animals.
definitely dont agree with taking two animals but I do agree tags need to be reissued. Have a return deadline and then reissue to an alternate.   :twocents:

Why not 2 animals?

If he had tags I'd agree, but permits I don't.  He knew ahead of time what risk he was putting the tag in for.

The issue isn't this fella taking the risk, it's the Permit that will go un-used, and not be issued to another applicant, who would use it.  Hence the second draw.
Unless the dates are concurrent or tags out during the first, then it doesn't have to go unused.  I think quality permits are around 50% successful.  So he can hunt the second if the first is bust.

Right, so a 50% chance it will go unused as well.

I don't think this is a serious issue, but with the draw odds being such a massive point of contention, this seams to be a way to help add some opportunity.

Besides being able to put in for more then one unit I like the way it is.  If you decide to put in for both and draw both you should get burned.  You still get to build points in a category even if you don't put in for permit.  Putting in for both when you have that many points is just being greedy and not smart with your points.  I have been pointing QBull for years because I haven't drawn a reg bull in 13 years.  This year I finally drew a reg Bull permit so next year I will start applying for QB.  Not sure why anyone would risk losing 10+ years of applying when they know there is a chance of drawing both.

I was the .05% this year. I drew Clockum and Alkali. 15 points each. One permit  will get wasted.

I do not regret my decision to apply for both, as statistically, I was in the 17 out of 1100 for Clockum and the 10 out of 500 for Alkali. If anyone thinks they should have held off with odds like that, more power to you. I would do it again in the future without hesitation.

Not applying for both categories with Washington drawing odds, it’s almost like saying “I’m not applying for 2 oil tags in a year because I only have time to hunt one”. If that’s how you think, keep on thinking it so it will help my odds in the future.

Anyway, I’m thankful for what I got.

:yeah: and you consciously applied for both so not like you weren't aware of the possible consequences. Besides, hard to be mad when you have a Colockum tag in your pocket :chuckle:

What they need to do is only have one category- BULL ELK.

That would make sense.

I'd really like to go back to "Deer" and "Elk".  I feel more for the guys who used to be able to draw a meat tag every couple of years by applying for antlerless, than I do for the trophy buck and bull guys - their odds just went from really bad to even worse.
As long as we have the habitat, we can argue forever about who gets to kill what and when.  No habitat = no game.

If you get drawn for 2 elk permits, you should be able to fill 2 permits.  I know this won't be a popular opinion.  Yes, sucks for the rest of us that don't get drawn year after year for anything, but that's the lottery.   If WDFW has a system that doesn't prevent a guy from applying and potentially drawing 2 tags for the same species in the same year, then IMO you've paid the money over the years, spent your points and should get to do both hunts.  It's not like WDFW is going to reissue the tag to someone else and they don't reinstate points.  The state wins and we the applicant loose.  Horrible system they have in place.

I talked to a guy a few year ago who drew Naches early rifle and a late Teanaway rifle elk tag the same year. Pretty sure he didn’t fill the first.

Once I get to 7-8 points I start applying for only one category for elk

I think they should cut the amount of tags you get to apply for.  1 quality unit and 2 antler less.

I wonder how they would combine all the points back together again?  If you had 10 in bull, 10 in qual bull, 10 in antlerless would they average it out at 10 or give you 30 points?
