Curlew Lake advice?
« on: July 25, 2019, 12:19:15 PM »
I am going over to Curlew lake this weekend and was wondering if anyone has any advice? I would love to find a Tiger, but I am not picky. I am camping at the state park and have a cartopper with an electric motor. Looks like a pretty large lake, I have 2 1/2 days to wander around. Thanks for any help

I know very little, but they lurk in the shallows. Might try by some of the inlets maybe trout creek over by blacks beach resort :dunno: Heard a segmented rapala on a steal leader is good. I've also heard that a live chick works well but if you go that route I'd probably keep it on the down low.

We always caught them on big black or purple spinner baits and bucktail spinners. Floating and casting around the milfoil, along any structure, and transition zones usually produced. Trolling can be highly effective in the right zones. Biggest one I ever caught was right in front of the state park swim area!  :yike:

Fishing with live bait in freshwater in WA is legal as long as it's not a live fish as bait.  You can fish with live non-fish aquatic animals found in the same body of water as you are fishing.  Not sure how you're going to catch a live "legal" chick though. :dunno:

I mean I've NEVER gotten a birds nest while fighting a 6" perch on a salmon rod that took me... an hour, maybe 2, to get out?  :dunno:    :chuckle:    :bdid:

I'd stick by the trestle, early in the morning spot fishing has always worked for me.

I went to Curlew lake last weekend. I caught a couple of perch and then couldn’t keep the little bass off. I caught 47 6-8 inch bass in 2 days!! Only one 1 1/2 lb bass, 3 total perch and a trout. Also has a Tiger Muskie eat one of the fish I caught right next to the boat, cut through the mono, I was using an ultralight pole at the time!!

What a coincidence! I’ll be over there this weekend too, also my first time. I’ll shoot you a pm with my contact information. Good luck!

last time we stayed at Fisherman's Cove Resort, in the early morning we would fish for trout from the dock, and you could watch the smaller muskies hunting in the shallows, it was pretty cool to see how the stalk their prey. There was a huge muskie that stayed near the fish pen.
That lake is so productive with a large variety of fish, it would be hard not to catch fish there. My sons would spend hours fishing for squaw fish when they found out the resort owner pays you to kill them. They had a blast.

Normal perch tactics, troll cowbells with a wedding ring and worm at walking speed for trout.  Or pull a brown leach on a full sinking line if you are a fly guy.

I have only landed 2 Muskies a couple things I have learned, get high in the boat with good sun glasses to spot them.  They sit at a 30 degree angle looking up to ambush normally right at a drop off with a weed line.  Find the perch and you will spot the hunter close by.  Finally they have very poor eye sight.  I have seen them just flat out miss when trying to take a bait.
