I will be hitting the Quilcen/Dabob  bay coho quite a bit. Hopefully report back soon.

Headed to our place in Brinnon over the long weekend. Havent decided if I'll bring a fishing pole or not. Most likely leave the boat home. Tempting though. Those Quil fish can be pretty frustrating in the bay.

My dad has been talking about trying out quilcen all summer, we've never been,  what makes it frustrating?

Bay is shallow, and netts are out , saw some guys parked down fishing the mouth on foot
it can get a little skokish :chuckle:

I would run up the point no point before dealing with the nets in Quilcene bay!

Fishing is spotty at buoy 10, we hooked 7 but no keepers Monday and only one chinook today. Will be on Willapa Wednesday.

Can be very locked jaw in the bay. Can see loads of them jumping all around you and not get a bite. I know there are people that do ok with this fishery. But it can be really tough. If your fishing the river its crowded. Flossing or snagging is the name of the game and the Indians go from hole to hole with dip nets and garbage cans. If they aren't in a hole with meat sticks and triple hooks.

You should be  good, there were fish to catch just thin on keepers at this point. Willlapa on the other hand fished well today. Only bonked two nooks but had lots of action and lost 2 coho.

So we’ve been loosing a lot of fish right at the boat. I’ve been trying my darnedest not to give them any slack and have the net ready but we keep loosing them. Do any of seasoned vets have any tips for getting more fish in the boat?

You using spoons?  I prefer to fish hoockies as two hooks are better than one.  Tough not to have one or two pop off.  Keeping their heads in the water until the last second is what I try to do.

I’ve pretty much lost fish with spoons, hoochies and a plain double hook with herring. One day we lost 6 at the boat  :bash: When a fish is on, do you guys go to neutral or keep at trolling speed?

Bigger hooks hold better, new hooks sink deeper.  Beyond that, keep pressure on them and as said above, don't pull their heads out of the water if at all possible.

I also have a very long handled net so I have a better reach.

The fish gods know your a Bears & Kaepernick fan!😂 Just kidding.

When they are up on top, close to the boat & want to thrash their head out of the water, roll your rod tip down towards the water while still not giving them slack. It will put them back down under the water where you can control them again. :twocents:
