I have a couple cheap raccoon size cage traps and am looking to buy a more substantial and larger cage trap. I've been looking at this cage trap from tru catch. It's the 42D homesteader deluxe and is 40x17x24. The hope is to be able to catch a bobcat in it. It seems pretty reasonably priced for what it is. Any insight? or tips on cats in general? Very new to trapping but want something to do outdoors over the winter.

There an okay trap.  I had some of there traps years ago and I didn't like several things about the trap.  One is the chain and the pan.  Way to many moving parts.  An animal such as a raccoon gets in there and you will be repairing that trap or throwing it away.

I would invest my money into a better trap.  Take a look at Tomahawk Live Traps.  I used them for 35+ years and they hold up very well and I have or I should say had some that were that old when I sold my business.  The bad thing about buying any trap and having it shipped to you is the cost of the shipping.

 As for trapping cats, bobcats are pretty easy to catch.  Look for where they are and set on sign.  As for bait, you can't bet beaver meat.

Ouchfoss a member on here that makes killer cat traps I can vouch for them and they’re bullet proof and probably the best design for catching cats and better price then the trap you’re looking at

Could someone expound on why just ok? Pros/Cons. Don't want to spend a bunch on $ only to have to spend more it's hard enough getting as it is

Hahaha !! True BUT  cam trips and Briar patches don’t hold a spot on my line either

One thhing is weight. Pretty heavy. They are also to wide and take up a lot of space. The Camtrips are much lighter and stack into each other.

I think that the cam trip cages are a great way to go for bobcat. They are pretty light, strong and durable, have adjustable pan tension, easy to transport because the stack inside each other (nesting), and they are a better value. They are sold in sets of 3 and 4.

The only thing I didn't like about them is that when i took them out of the shipping box they smelled VERY strongly of chemicals/paint, and I didn't have much success the first year until they were "weathered" a little and the smell wore off.

Thanks for all the insight everybody. Currently using Dunlap Lures Rage Predator Bait which I believe is a muskrat meat based bait. Been seeing lots of what looks like mouse poop in my cages, but nothing setting them off. Do people recommend hanging the bait attached to a sponge? Or just stab a stick into the ground in the back of the cage with bait on it? Also should I put dirt/pine needles even on the pan?

I’ve never used a Boughten paste bait for cages but ya I would definitely hang in a cheese cloths or something
If targeting cats try and get some beaver or duck to hang in there
