Quick MT doe tag question
« on: March 21, 2021, 06:10:52 PM »
Hey guys, my google foo failed me, do you need to have a general tag to buy an OTC doe tag?  We have a young hunter that is looking to shoot A deer, doesn't care if it's a buck or doe and doesn't really have the money for a general tag so my thoughts were to get him an OTC whitetail doe tag for $80 or whatever they are these days.  I'm thinking you can have just a doe tag but would hate to give him bad advice and be sitting the sidelines this year.

Thanks.

A doe tag in Montana is called a B-tag it would cost $80.  A couple different ways of purchasing one. One way would be to submit to the game department with an application picking three hunting units. The other and what most do is wait until all draws are completed and purchase OTC tags for $80 each.
If I recall that includes your conservation license ( hunting lic).
I do believe that the minor will need to a firearms safety course also.
I hope I answered your question.

Fire guy pretty much nailed it. If the hunter is 12 and has hunter ed get them setup with an ALS account and either apply in the B draw (same time period as antelope i believe) or wait and buy leftover tags. I recommend the draw route if the area you hunt doesn't give out a lot of doe tags. The units that usually have leftovers are like 620, 630, etc.  I knew the freezer was gonna be empty so I bought a bunch last year for 620 and ran over thanksgiving weekend after I got my pins removed and loaded up.  Good way to fill the freezer.

If it were me, I would have this person apply for a mule deer b tag in the area where I hunt. If that didn’t work, I would search leftover b tags and then look at buying an over the counter whitetail b tag. Over the counter deer b $75. Drawing deer b $80. There will be a base hunting license fee of $15 and a conservation license fee of $10 unless previously purchased with a general license.

Thanks guys.  He’s dialed with Hunters Ed, I have only bought otc b tags after I had my general and just wanted to make sure there wasn’t any strange rule that you had to be successful in the general draw to be eligible for an otc b tag.

The area we will hunt has unlimited b tags and plenty of farmers more than happy to see one removed so we’re good there.

Appreciate the help.

Good luck in the draw.

Yeah he is good to go without a combo tag. I took an old youth hunter with me last year to be my "left hand man" literally  :chuckle: and he bought two tags without having a buck tag

Did they stop doing the youth license option?

The nonresident youth combos are still offered at roughly half price of general. Under 18 at purchase is a youth for MT FWP.
