Wyoming 56-9 Help needed
« on: July 10, 2021, 11:12:54 AM »
A buddy and I drew the unit 56 archery elk tag in Wyoming. Half of the unit is wilderness and requires a guide to legally hunt for nonresidents. Any advice would be much appreciated as we likely can’t afford a guided trip… I contacted one outfitter and asked about a “drop camp” as far in as possible without crossing into the wilderness area. He said “56 is not worth archery hunting outside of the wilderness area”. Thoughts? Or any info? Thanks

I hope you get some good advice, and it doesn’t sound like that guide is helping you out.  Just wants you to sign up. I don’t know that unit but other units that are split between wilderness and public are great units. I hunted 62 back in 18, grizz are a prob, carry spray and a pistol, sleep w it.  Maybe try rokslide and see if a local will grab a permit to take you, you don’t need a guide in the wilderness if a local w a permit can go w ya.  Good luck, keep me posted!!

Are there other guides in that area you could contact? The local bio can probably give you some helpful information also.

The outfitter you contacted is not lying its some rugged country and gets better later. The unit is loaded with grizzly. 56-9 was actually the bullet point of a major discussion at the last local Wildlife task force meeting and how it really only exist for outfitter welfare! I think you can still find some elk early one up green crk and pagoda but you're going to earn every ounce of it. Clocktower is great later but its a dirty mother! good luck id highly recommend bring stock or renting stock.
Never to far, Just grab another minute!
