First year with a multi tag!
« on: August 28, 2021, 06:04:42 PM »
Couldn’t come at a better time. Wife is due with our first beginning of September, so modern deer season is going to be super limited. So I’ll be diving into archery this year with some muzzle loader and rifle when I can.

Hoping for some advice when it comes to late season like mid to late December.
I’ve gotten all my deer (only 2) both on saturdays of late season modern. So I’ve yet to hunt much snow or way into the post rut.

Either way super excited bows getting dialed in. First year I got a spike, last year I got a fork and horn so this year I’m hoping for a 3x3 but I shoot the first legal thing I see so hopefully I can be patient this year.

congrats. its nice to have the flexibility to pick and choose what works for you. my personal opinion, just keep shooting the first legal one you find. have to get good at killing before getting too worried(its a mistake i made early on). getting that confidence will be huge in the long run

I’ve always sort of been in the camp of if I shoot the first legal deer/elk I see eventually I’ll get something besides a spike or fork and horn lol. But I’ve also heard as I get better, the chase of a quality buck over the meat becomes the challenge. It’s no longer fill the freezer it’s. How do I challenge myself.

Because right now haha I feel like a spike is challenging

and that is perfectly ok! have to start somewhere and spikes and forkies for the first few years is completely acceptable to me. youll have your run ins with bigger deer along the way too, dont pass those up! ha! enjoy the process and all the time you can be in the woods.

not sure where youre at or where you hunt, but maybe pick 2-4 day trips for during the rut of any of the three. maybe hunt end oct right to nov ( depending on the unit) and chase black tails. that doesnt work, plan a long weekend and head east and hit the whitetail rut, middle to end of nov( again depending on the unit) try and utilize the tag and take advantage of the rut times where your chances are higher just based on the timeframes. figure out what weapon youre proficient with and make a game plan. have fun with it. post you giant when you get him down! ill be expecting it!

Ok, geez, whoever your hunting mentor was/is the first thing they should have told you to plan it so your crumb snatchers are not born in the fall (SEP - NOV).  That’s hunting season for cripes sakes.  :chuckle:.  Congrats on your first MS tag. Have fun with it, get out as much as you can, and wishing the Mrs. and your new little one an uneventfully hospital event. Congrats on the new member to your family sir.
