Going to buy a new bow
« on: April 18, 2007, 08:51:07 AM »
Any suggestions.  I'd like a fairly fast bow, single cam.  I'm not a speed freak but love to drive moderately heavy arrows from a fast bow.  I have been shooting a Darton Lightening....FOREVER and it's time to upgrade.  Thanks for any suggestions.

I hear a ton of people raving about the Mathews line,....maybe switchback, idk, I haven't looked at compounds for awhile.  I don't know if that is single cam or not.

I'm hoping to upgrade to a Bowtech this year.  A buddy of mine shoots for them and swears by em!

I shoot BowTech and Mathews You couldn't go wrong with either one. I shoot 3d's with my Allegance and hunt with my LX. I have made some amazingly good shots with the LX and have a lot of confidence in the field with that bow. I have also shot a few 300's with the BowTech. That being said I am about to upgrade,to a Drenalin.

What style do you shoot?  Fingers, or release and your main purpose?  I shoot a compound instinctively with fingers because I enjoy it more. For the $s I prefer reflex.  Mostly bowhunt & practice at unmarked distance.

In 1979, I started shooting a Bear Polar LTD, then went to a Martin Lynx and finally a Darton Lightning.  I learned with fingers and now I shoot with a release.  I have always shot with sights.  I have shot with pendulums and fixed sights.  I do not shoot over 40 yards.  I hunt black bear, whitetails and elk.  I have taken turkeys and yotes with my bow as well as the three previous mentioned.  I have tried traditional bows and I just enjoy shooting compounds too much to switch, although I wisheded I enjoyed shooting them more. :)  I hope that helps.

For my 2 cents.....  If price was no object I would buy a Bow Tech or Hoyt, For best value I would go Reflex (made by hoyt).  I am mostly a hunter so I have a Reflex Highlander.  I prefer longer axle to axle length as they seem more forgiving.  I also prefer aluminum arrows over carbon.  Best bow I ever had was a Hoyt Defiant (94) 40" ATA, at 60#.  Due to health problems I have to shoot 42#, but I have taken black bear years ago with a 45# recurve and got complete penetration.  Don't get overbowed!!!
My advice would be to go to a pro shop and shoot as many bows as possible and pick the one that feels best for you.

I just picked up a Mathews Switchback off of e-bay in march and that bow SHOOTS REAL SMOOTH. I use to shoot a Hoyt but like the Mathews better. I picked it up for around $400. it was in perfect condition.

Sold my Mathews for the purchase of the Guardian by Bowtech.
Smooth, fast, quite, and they are built in Eugene Or.
Nothing like having my pins from 20 yds. to 80 yds. in a small sight (speed 330 fps.)
Bows are personal pref., like one said earlier "shoot as many as possible to find the bow YOU are comfortable with"

I shot Mathews all the way through the 90's after they became the premier bow with the solo cam, shot a feathermax, then a MQ1, then a MQ32, then a LX, killing animals with all of them.  Then along came a Bowtech, I have the Patriot VFT and it is a dream, love that narrow grip.  Shoot as many as you can, but definitely I would look hard at the Bowtech and the Mathews lines of Bows.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Did you buy a bow yet? I'll make you a hell of a deal on a Ross CR337. It's hasn't been shot much at all....Maybe 3 dozen arrows through it. Lemme know man.
