Hold the phone, there is Halibut in area 10??
« on: May 24, 2023, 04:25:26 PM »
Saw that halibut was open in area 10 this weekend, never heard of that.  Does anyone know where to find them???  Maybe a PM if it's a secret.  Salmon starts june 1 in 11 so my cousin wants to run the boat this weekend to make sure it's all good, might as well try for a barn door.

My old man caught one in either 10 or 11 many years ago.

I've heard of some incidental catches from Possession in area 9 but I think an area 10 hali is as elusive as an OIL tag. Lingcod is open though, you'd have a far better chance at those.

thanks, yeah I killed a ling out there a few years ago, just barely long enough! Figured Hali would be tough.

WDFW would probably sell you a hali punch card for Lake Stevens.

Back in the late 80s, I was fishing from the Ilahee State Park Dock, Buzz Bombing for Black Mouth, when one of the other fishermen hooked onto something huge. He started yelling “I got a monster halibut”!
I decided I to go take a look. I had never heard of a halibut being caught anywhere near Bremerton before. Lots of skate though.
This guy was ecstatic that he caught a 70 - 80 pound halibut!
I had to tell him, no that is a 70 - 80 pound Skate not a halibut.
I told him to cut the wings off, and kick the rest back into the water. The. Use a cookie cutter to punch out round chunks and cook them like you would Scallops.
He did not believe me and took home his halibut/skate.

That’s pretty funny! My dad got towed around by a skate in quatermaster back in the day. It ate up great
