I don't play the Idaho game but here is my two cents. Now that the playing field is fair there were way more people applying because the process was strait forward and easy to do. No waiting in crazy lines in stores or trying to log on 5 different computers etc etc.  You need to remember that a lot of guys go with the tag services to try and draw tags in different states. In the past Idaho system the tag services just simply couldn't play that game. Now that the system is set up the way it is, these tag services are now applying all of their clients. Now with all that said, now that the draw has came out and success tanked for those that were used to getting tags, many next year will bail out. This is due to the upfront license cost that is not refundable and being there is no point system so there is no guarantee that your odds will be better this next year due to you not drawing last year.  Idaho is missing out on big bucks$$$ without implementing a non-resident point system that they could charge non-residents with. Not a preference point system but a simple bonus point system that would give guys that don't draw this year a little better chance at drawing next year over those that did draw this year. Like I said, not a preference point system or a squared or cubed bonus point system. Just one simple bonus point that would slightly increase the odds to those who don't draw.

Idaho is simply going to get worse for non-residents and actually resident too.  To many people moving into the state to support the past successes and opportunities.

I don’t think lots more applied this year. I’ve saw polls on a few hunting forums where a lot of people voted or commented that were not applying due to the non refundable $204. The further the people lived from Idaho the less likely to apply. If you are in driving distance of Idaho you can get a tag if you want it bad enough if you don’t draw with up coming return sales.

:yeah: There will be a lot of returned tags and controlled hunt opportunities. Contrary to some people’s opinion, it has been very easy to get a tag to hunt in Idaho even in the past system. It’s arguably more difficult now, as you have to keep trying with all the returns. But, if someone wants to hunt the opportunity will be there as it has been very year.

I hope your right but I'm leaning the other direction. I know about (10) more people that have never hunted or tried getting a tag in Idaho put in for the first time this year. I don't know a single person that got scared off about the refundable $, so in my circle or people i know, it is +10. I would say most guys that hunt Idaho consistently in years past, didn't draw tags. My guess is they were after some of the harder units and paid the price of not getting drawn.

I do believe that there will be a lot of future opportunity to get tags. Only reason i put in for deer is in case i didn't draw elk. I drew the elk tag(new unit for me - mid/low tier tag) so my deer tag won't be purchased. I know a few other folks that are in the same boat as me.

Other side of things is the Controlled Hunts in June. With people having to by the license and all the new people(at least in my circle) applying, i bet the NR draw odds will plumet. I really do hope I'm off on this....

I'm curious how many leftover tags will be in the second draw for the Feb 5-15 second draw.  Guys have til Jan 20 to buy their tag, so am assuming by end of Jan we will know how many of which tags go into the secondary draw......

And I have to imagine odds on that second draw are far worse.   Tens of thousands applying for a few hundred tags....

1st time I haven’t bought a tag since ‘99.   Many of those years I had two.

I’m not competing for a sh*tty general Idaho tag :chuckle:  There’s other stuff to do.

If @JakeLand's information is correct, then:  [(55,000 - 22,000) * $200] = $6.6M.  Think about it.  $6.6 million to the state coffers from non resident hunters who bought a license, but now cannot hunt because they don't have a tag (I know there are other opportunities).  I can't see this continuing next year, this is a sucker's game.

I just can’t believe what it’s become to get a tag, I had no problem with the old system even though it was crazy. Felt like I had a much better chance of getting a tag because we are only going to draw our first choice. Unless it’s tags nobody really wants. It’s like a bad dream not having a deer tag for Idaho. My kids can’t hunt Idaho this year now. I don’t want some crap tag just to say I’m hunting Idaho.

This will blow up the controlled hunts having 33k licenses out there without a tag.

They should have just combined all the non-res tags into one drawing, I think the odds would have been better for the most part...
