What pants are you guys rocking in the peninsula?
« on: Yesterday at 05:57:32 PM »
I’ve been out here for a few years now and what I’d wear hunting pretty much any wear else, just ain’t cutting it. It’s not the wet, the wet I can stand, it’s just everything getting shredded whenever I’m in the slightest proximity of blackberry, which is everywhere. Any advice would be great.

I wear those super heavy double front carharts, green or brown.

Downside is they DO get a little heavy when you’re bushwhackin’ and they get soaked.

I got a pair of filson single tin pants for beating brush when they were 50% off earlier this year.  They're heavy and stiffer than what I'm used to, but that's the tradeoff for durability. They're also bomb proof and waterproof, though ironically I never needed them in the wet this year, so didn't test that. They have a great reputation with loggers, which says a lot for handling brush.

 :yeah:

Ran these in SE AK for several seasons and loved them! Now I wear Sitka Mountain pants, and stay away from the blackberry as much as possible!  :twocents:

The best combo I've found if your in the brush is Carhartt storm defender bibs with a merino base layer plus a PVC rain jacket. Pvc bibs shred too easily. I'm in the process of shredding a pair of viking rain pants that were similar to the carhartt but cheaper and thinner. The storm defender used to be better, full zip from the hip to the ankles plus buttons. Now they are half zip with velcro in place of buttons. I also use gaiters and if its real nasty, caulked Hoffman rubber boots. If you move steady to avoid sweating, you will stay 90% dry. I like tin pants, they are good in wet brush and thorny brush but can get pretty cold and wet by the end of the day. I wear wool pants in the real cold.

When possible, I try to avoid brambles altogether. But sometimes I simply don't get that luxury (usually tracking or attempting to catch up with elk on their trails). If I end up in the stuff, I just try to be careful and methodical with each step to avoid getting snagged. I would imagine it looks quite amusing from afar. I would rather be comfortable in my Sitka Mountain pants or Kuiu Attack pants than trap my sweat inside of bibs. Just by trying to avoid the brambles as best as possible, I've managed to use the same pairs of pants for many seasons now.

Where I seem to struggle the worst with thorned vegetation is out in the middle of a clearcut, where I'm constantly dragging my boots through nets of low lying blackberry that hide in the grass and downed limbs.

Also, the typical Himalayan blackberry bushes are one thing. The cutleaf evergreen blackberry bush is another beast entirely. That stuff is awful. I'm doing an about face 180 whenever I run into clumps of that stuff, no questions asked.

I have some Walls and Carharts bibs that are water repellent for a bit... Where some good base layers and hopefully it's not pouring that day... That devils club is no joke though... I started carrying tweezers to get it out of my hands... That other really spiny one, kinda purple, worse then blackberry... I don't know...
I love you... I really do...
