Gun Storage in Unconditioned Space
« on: Yesterday at 09:51:05 PM »
Thinking about moving my safe to my shop. Anybody here keep their rifles in an unconditioned space? If so, what precautions do you take to prevent rust? I’m on the west side, so less temperature swing, but lots of humidity.

My safe is in my garage in my current house and was in my last house. Close to 20 years now. Same safe and some of the same rifles. I don’t do anything and it’s fine. No corrosion, moisture, etc issues at all. Western WA.

I have a room in my garage, unheated, I have a gun safe and ammo safe. I go to the dollar store and buy a dozen of those little moisture absorbent tubs. Put two each safe and get about four months out each one.
Going on thirty years now. Every six months I empty the safe, wipe every gun down ,swab every barrel.

So far no issues.

I use one Golden Rods in both of my safes. I’ve only had one fail in 40+ years, I check them for functioning yearly.

Easy enough. Just the damp-rid tubs?

I use the golden rods in my safes and they are in temp controlled rooms.  Never too much protection / insurance when it comes to protecting my investments.  When I lived on the west side, they worked great.  I do know some friends that had problems on the west side with surface rust.  I also knew of a guy that the bottom of his safe got rusted out sitting in his home car garage.  If I had a safe in my garage, I would have it off the floor with thin wood slats or a rubber mat.  I would still bolt it down, but wouldn't want metal in direct contact with the cement.

I may be a little paranoid though..... :chuckle: :chuckle:
