tips to quiet a bow?
« on: July 11, 2009, 04:26:43 PM »
I am a first year archery hunter and have been given a bow by my grandfather. I could purchase a new one, but there would just be a great deal of satisfaction of taking and animal with the bow he gave me. It is a little on the loud side though. I have string leaches, limbsavers, and a stabilizer already, but it's still loud. It's a 1998 martin rage with fury cams. Is there much I can do or is it just out dated? Any advice will be helpful.

you can double check the spine of your arrow, if you're underspined it will be louder. If not it doesn't pertain.

I had an older Hoyt and installed an sts system on it. It did the most to quiet it. The sts is a bar that comes back to the string, the string hits against it & stops the vibration after shot. My bow was same noise level but much shorter time. Seemed like a different bow after it was installed. Maybe some guys on here have installed it on your model & can give advice on your exact bow. They are easy to install & adjust, maybe go to a bow shot & they will let you try out before buying ? I installed the whiskers on my Mathews & it quieted it down considerably. Good luck. Mike

Does your bow have a mounted quiver? I had a Hoyt with a 2 piece quiver and the quiver is what was making all the noise..Or just get real close to your quarry and the noise shouldn't matter too much..

Got the same bow. I do not find mine loud. Is it properly tuned ?  As far as outdated, it would kill an elk when it was new, why not now ? Go buy a new bow and by this time next year it wil be " outdated " too. Mess around some more to quiet it then go out and get an animal this year in honor of your grandfather.
Can't we all just get along?

I shot furys for ever , kiiled many elk and deer . there loud for sure , heavy arrows will help with sound . that shorter axle bow may cause a bit more noise than the fury risser . It seems to me that a buddy had that combo in the day and it was louder than the fury . back then we didn't think they were to loud it's just todays bows are really quiet. good luck with gramps bow .

Backcountry,
What I did with my quiver was, New piece of foam on the inside, but I stuffed a bit of T.P. in the bottom of the quiver first then crammed the new foam down in there over the little bit of T.P. Next I put two of the small limbsavers on my quiver (the end the arrows go in). Then I wrapped any open plastic with cammo cloth tape. It was super cheap and might help you out. Or take the quiver off and shoot. See how loud it is without the quiver. If it's guiet then you know for sure the quiver is the problem..Also I got one of the limbsaver rubber grip wrapps. This helped just a bit too. It also makes your grip not get too cold when hunting in chilly weather. Good luck man...

Why are you so worried about it?

Because everyone I have shot with has said it was loud. And what else would I be worried about, maybe the fact giving the animal a heads up.
