Try Before You Buy!
« on: July 20, 2009, 01:05:54 AM »
I was reminded of that today when at Sportsmans.  I've been thinking of a rangefinder for this fall's archery hunt.  Because I'm happy with the value of my other Nikon products I was thinking of going with their $200 550yd model.  I picked it up, was impressed with the weight, and found its rangefinding capabilities agreeable. But then I asked to see the Leica (which I cannot afford right now)...

All I can say is, jimmney jillikers, Batman! I could notice a difference in the brightness, even in the store.  How much more that difference would be leveraged in low light conditions.  Normally, I don't put much weight into optics comparisons in the store because of the bright lighting often dillutes the comparison between quality optics and the not. I think I'm going to hold out until I can save up for the CFR 900 yd model.

I have a Nikon Monarch 800.  It's nice, but a Leica is much better.  I wish that I would have put up a bit more cash and picked-up a Leica.

When I worked at Sportsmans a couple of years ago in Arizona we would allways compare the rangefinders.  The optics on the Bushnell and Nikon didn't even come close to the Swarovski and Leica, but neither did the price. :twocents:

I picked up the Leica 1200 it is very nice.  I was also impressed with the new Leupold RX-1000.  That is also a good one for the money around $400 compared to the $600 for the Leica.

I saved up couple years ago, the leica 900 is the sh!!!t, although it is attached to my backpack by a nikon retractable lanyard  :chuckle:
if you can hold out a little more, the 1200 is waterproof. but I didn't think it mattered much cause it doesn't rain here in washougal

:)I bought a Nikon 550 last year, about 200. in the store and parking lot it was great, in the field it SUCKED, had to have bright light and very reflective target. I sold it after 2 months for 150.
