Mountain house for me, they are light and yummy. If I am going where it might be dry and don't have water, I will take MRE'S. I hike in a ways to spike camp, so I need light, and I usually don't have a problem finding water.
also, use instant potatoes, top ramen and lipton instant rice

:)Unless I am going a long way in, more than 5 miles, I'd rather make two trips and eat real food. Once I made three trips, the last one for a case of beer.

Ok, check this out. This may be the best backpacking meal ever made (I have posted this recipe before):
1 MRE Main Meal with chicken in it
1 package of Ramen
1 Package of MRE cheese
1 package of MRE Crackers or Wheat Snack Bread
Boil water over backpack stove in a canteen cup
Add Ramen noodles and flavor packet
Add MRE Main Meal, stir until heated
Add MRE Cheese, stir until creamy
Remove from heat and eat with crackers or bread
I have never made this for anyone that didn't love it (especially after a long day of backpacking/hunting/roadmarching etc...).
My 10 year old is my latest convert, we made it twice while backpacking in MT last month.

I like to bring jerky, some trail mix stuff or a couple Snickers bars.

Mountain House, snacks (jerky, trailmix) and that's about it.

The Jet Boil system is the best packing system I've ever used. Just boil water and pour into the Mountain House dried food pouches. Light weight, no mess, no cleaning. It's perfect for hot cocoa when I'm sitting in the snow for hours waiting for elk.
I'm a hunter and mountain climber....and I swear by it.

I just got the Brunton backpack stove system, and I use it with my good old fashioned Army canteen cup. I was very impressed with it.

Lipton's mexican rice with some canned/packaged chicken. Take some cheese to melt in it, and stop at Taco Bell for hot sauce packets. Cook it all up and throw it on a tortilla.
Mac and cheese with tuna is quick, easy, and fairly light as well.
Spaghetti is easy if you have two stoves.

I'll eat Mountain House Meals mainly. If you're bringing tuna, you might consider the small bags instead of a can. It packs easier (both in and out).
Otherwise, it's Idahoan instant potatoes in a bag, dried fruit (pineapples, cran-raisins), peanuts, jerky, bagels, Lipton noodles, powdered milk with shredded (usually crushed) mini wheats and maybe strawberry frosted pop-tarts.
