Lake Chelan Mountain Goats
« on: July 20, 2009, 03:16:57 PM »
I am going on vacation to Wapato Point on Lake Chelan in August with my wife's family.  As a lot of you probably know by my posts, I absolutely love mountain goats and I was hoping to be able to get a hike in to go look for the goats near Chelan.  I have spent very little time in the area and don't really know the hikes at all.  If anyone is willing to point me in the right direction to get into some mountain goats I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

This time of year the goats are up really high.  They won't be down by the lake like they are in November.  I think most of the goats are from deer/safety harbor and stehekin.  That's about all I got Shane.  Good luck.

i have seen them down low in august a few times. same areas mentioned before, both sides of the lake.  there is a couple spots that the lady of the lake will pull in close because the goats are generally around there so the people can maybe catch a glimpse.  you could always get out and get up to holden village and hike up in those basins from there and i know you will see goats.  so a boat ride and a bus ride to holden and you are in there.  But it is straight up from there.....

A friend of mine saw a nice billy above Antilon lake last fall. It's just a short drive up into the hills from Wapato. It was late in the year with snow on the ground so I kind of doubt that it's a summer hangout for them but possibly in that general area? Let us know what you see!

Shane, I'd be interested to know if you got out to look for moauntian goats and if you saw any in the unit from Safety Harbor Creek to Moore Point.

If you haven't headed up there yet a good place to look woud be from Big Goat Creek to Canoe Creek but none of that area is that inviting for hiking unless you have a few days to spend camping out.

Thanks

Didn't make it fare enough up lake to find any mountain goats.  We did see a bunch of Bighorns, one small ram, but that was it.

Were you there last week?  Damn, I'd have taken a hike with you.

I have seen them a couple mile up lake from 25 mile creek on the south side of the lake during the summer.  Most of the goats I have seen have been on the south shoreline.
I've hunted almost everyday of my life, the rest have been wasted.

Actually got back today.  I was there Saturday through today, probably missed you from last week.

Sweet, wish I could've seen some, but I'm sure I'll get my share in helping some of the tag holders this year.

I saw a big big billy on the north side of the lake today.  I saw 3 others up around Stehekin.  More than usual with the cold weather and I wasn't really looking much.
