Giant Dall
« on: October 27, 2009, 04:38:51 PM »
I just posted this as a reponse to Giant Stone. This sheep was supposedly high 180's. Dont know though, a little different than the Giant Stone as the horns diverge out away from the bases. Speaking of bases it looks like his eyes are about to bulge out of his head. This ones for you CoachCW!

The picture was taken by Tom Soucek in 1993.  I met Tony Russ (author of the book) a couple times at various events.  He is a Dall Sheep killing fool, and a super nice guy that was more than willing to share information with folks that asked the right questions.  He used to be a guide and does most now with a bow from the draw hunts...  The world record Dall hung in Wildlife Museum at Fort Richardson for years.  They closed down the Post museum in 2007 for office space and I don't have a clue where it went, maybe over to Elmendorf AFB museum??????  It was shot by Harry Swank in 1961.  I think it is still the number #1....  It's B&C score was 189 and 6/8 inches.  48 and 5/8 inches on the right and 47 and 7/8 on the left...  It was a stud- something to get anyone interested in Sheep for sure....  Sorry didn't mean to sound like Cliff Claven.....  But had the book right in front of me when I saw this post...

His book is a classic for first timers.

I read it twice before my hunt.

The only draw back of sheep hunting is once you have done it, pretty much all you can think about is going back !

I've hunted for and guided hunters to Dall sheep many years ago,(35). Still think about those hunts, and still think they are the best of hunts. Dall Sheep is very tasty also.!! :chuckle:
