.25 caliber kind of seems weak for elk. I know that is going at a high velocity but Ive always kind of been after retaining energy.

I have 3 friends that shoot the 300 ultra mag and I can say that recoil is stiff.  Not terrible, but I wouldn't want to have to sight one in.  For the record, none of them have had any trouble with their scopes.

I have the Remington XCR in 7mm Ultra Mag and absolutely love this setup.  Gun is just about bullet proof, caliber is super flat shooting, kicks about like my 30-06, and when it connects with animals they go DOWN.  My gun shoots 1" at 100 yards all day long with factory ammo.  My only knock would be not many factory options for ammo but since you handload....problem solved.  Just about the perfect deer/elk killer, at long range if need be, if you ask me.

I do beleive that that .257 weatherby would be hell on deer though. Whatd o you think about a .25-06 as in how much does it reallly differ from the .257 weatherby/

I know two guys who shoot 25-06 exclusivly. between them I would bet my house they have killed over 40 elk and at least 15 moose....all with the good ol' 2-bit.

I have a 25-06 26" barrel that spits a 90gr pill at 3500fps. my 257ro spits a 100gr tsx at 3650fps. not much difference at all. the wby is just more of a good thing.

Ironhead,

Thanks for that link.  I've been looking at Conley Precision for a while now.  It actually is pretty spendy unless you order at least 5 boxes at one time.  Otherwise you have to pay a setup fee.  They do have a lot of rounds I would like to try.  I found 8 boxes of 160 gr Nosler Partitions, which they don't make anymore, for $29.00 a box at the local True Value.  Bought one box.  4 shots to get sighted in, then shots number 5, 6, and 7 were about 3/4 of an inch apart.  Went back to the store and bought the rest.  I've also shot some of the factory 150 scirrocos.  They shot really well too.  I bought a box of the 175 gr A-Frames but haven't had a chance to shoot those yet.  If Conley starts loading the new Barnes TTSX I might just have to give them a try!!!  Thanks again.

The more I look into that .257 weatehrby the more I like it. Pics of a brand new one may be showing up on here may be showing up very soon. Coyote season is among us and that just gives me another excuse to get a new gun before elk season.

257 , Do you shoot that rig at Elk,  and did you kill that Oryx with it. Just curious as I know alot of guys that shoot one rifle and shoot it very well.

I would be kind of scared to go after elk with that small of a bullet but thats just me  :dunno:. I have seen an elk walk around after having two 175 grain bullets from a 7mm rem mag to the lungs at 200 yards walk around for a minute before keiling over. SHot one with a 180 grain bullet from a 30-06 which also moved aroung for awhile

Mossback, thats true but I have seen well placed arrows drop them in 15 yards. A light bullet doesn't leave much room for error but in the right hands they do all they need to.
