Day 2 much better than opening day
«

I had been watching the herd that I hunt closely on Fri the day before the opener and saw 5 legal bulls in it, as often happens with elk hunting other hunters pushed the herd off of the private land I had permission to hunt out on the public land surrounding the area. My hunting partner and I were able to cut the tracks opening morning but soon realized there were about 8 other hunters already following them and soon it sounded like world war 3! We backed out very disappointed and I feared all the bulls I knew of were dead. My 7 year old daughter sensed my disappointment and urged me not to give up and told me I had better get her an elk for her birthday (NOV. 8th) We headed back out this morning and with a little luck we were able to get on a herd and it had 1 legal bull left in it. The best part is he hit the ground about 50 yards from a road so we were able to load it whole. I didnt get field pics because I forgot my fanny pack with the camera in it.

Nice bull!
Not to sound like a broken record, but how the heck do so many guys end up with WHOLE elk in the backs of trucks?! Do they drag them out with cable? I've heard of this practice but don't see how that could be good for the meat

I have a spool of 400 yds of 5/8 inch crab line that I use to drag out both deer and elk. As long as you dont field dress it til you are done dragging it the meat will be fine, there is no better game bag in the world than an animals natural hide! I do take many of my animals behind gated areas where my spool does me no good but whenever I can get to within 400 yds on an open road I choose to work smarter not harder.

Thx .270 yes opening day was a bit wild but on day 2 there was hardly anybody, I figured maybe they all got discounted tickets to the hawks lions game or something
