Main species of pursuit? I mean are you a deer hunter with maybe some intention of hunting bears but never going to hunt elk? R U an elk hunter who already has a good deer gun? Or are we talking about something that your gonna use to go help Rasbo rid his yard of moles?

Kind of a vague poll. More like, What's your favorite brand?
List what you demand from a rifle. With only a $1,000 budget for rifle and scope then your choices are limited.
Good optics will run you about half that. Say.. Leupold VXIII 3-9x50 ish. So you're looking for a rifle at less than $500 (tax)
The best bang for the buck is a Savage or Marlin XS/XL series. Maybe a Remington 700 series.
So, list what you demand in a rifles feature list.
Accuracy.. Ok, that's a given. At that price you're not lookin for Stainless.. Pillar bedding? Adjustable trigger? Light weight? Resale value? Blind box magazine, drop floor plate, removeable magazine? Fluted or jeweled bolt? Composite or wood stock? Short action? Magnum, or Long action. Big game hunting rifle or heavy barrel varmint rifle?
None of us could answer this poll with any intelligence applied without many of those questions answered. If you go to the gun counter without those answers, you're just a commission saleman's dream buyer.

Hunting for-Elk, buying one of the choices in-300wsm, don't have a "favorite Brand" my deer gun is a Ruger m77 270 win, had it forever not getting rid of it just have a chance to buy another rifle.

Tp be honest I voted Ruger based on your budget, you already have one and like it. But if you could bump that a notch, I'd go with a Browning in stainless stalker for the 300wsm. I've got one in 325wsm and my buddy, Silent Bob, has his 300wsm. Nice light easy to pack guns that shoot well.

I vote Browning stainless or composite stalker. Get a caliber you want.

Check Gun Broker, etc., for a Browning Medallion II A-Bolt Grade III octagon barrel.....comes in various calibers. Beautiful wood....might find one without a scope for a grand. Only made so many for the 2007 Shot Show.

Do not, I repeat do not buy a Tikka, see my threads on the problems I've had with Berretta products. Get a rifle like Winchester or Browning where parts are readily available. I know Tikka's shoot great and are a great dollar value, many have had great success but not me!
