Trophy Blacktails, The Science Of The Hunt
« on: July 12, 2010, 01:56:41 PM »
BEST BOOK ON HUNTING BACKTAILS I'VE EVER READ!!!!!!!

I just finished reading "Trophy Blacktails, The Science of the Hunt" by Scott Haugen.  What I liked most about this book is that Scott Haugen looked at Science to answer questions and to explain all the why's!  Scott Haugen is also a host of a hunting show Game Chasers.  He lives in Oregon and grew up on blacktail hunting, has a bio degree and uses it to learn more about hunting, Scott is also known as one of the best blacktail hunters and has done more to actually understand the blacktail than any game department has.

I met Scott last year at a sportsman show and chatted with him for a little bit. He then autographed a book and handed it too me, told me it would be a good read and wished me good luck with the season.  After reading this book, I've even starting to scout deer differently.

Highly recommended!!

Scott's book is one of the best blacktail references available.  Boyd Iverson's and Cameron Hanes' books are really great too.  Note - there is a theme here...anyone guess what it is?  (Not just the Oregon connection...more specific than that).

I've read Boyd Iverson's "Blacktail Trophy Tactics II" and thought it was a good read, and i've read many magazine articales, but Scotts book is the most in depth and complete book I've read by far!!

bow4elk, what theme do you have in mind?

Ok, those guys all live in the Willamette Valley, which around Eugene/Springfield, is home to some of the best genetics for big blacktails anywhere.  These guys grew up hunting in the best proving grounds available, in my opinion.

Just ordered my copy.  I hunted a particular buck last Fall hard and came up emptyhanded.  I'm hoping he's still around and this book can supply me with a missing puzzle piece or two to put him on the wall.  Thanks for the info.
