Trad Question
« on: August 24, 2010, 08:53:00 PM »
Ok I got the traditional bug, bad!  Bought a 50# cheap recurve. Shoot the heck out of it.  I find I shoot my compound and get board.  And switch to the recurve and shoot the evening away.   Now I want a better bow.  Looking at the Martin Savannah.  My question is:  I have a short draw length.  Around 25".  On my 50# I am pulling about 41#.  So I am thinking of buying a 60# Savannah.  So I pull about 50#.  I want to hunt with it.  I hunt elk with a compound now.  Am I thinking correct on this?

Thoughts?

I did think about ordering a custom but, think I should wait a few years.

Do they have a bow for your draw length with the poundage you want?  I am not trying to be a turd when I say this, but you may want to look at lady or youth bows.  My first hunting bow was a ladies model.

You are about right, if you buy a 60# Savannah, it will draw about 52 pounds at your draw length.

When you jump to a custom, there are a few guys that have high performance bows that really kick ass for a short draw. Centaur is one... But, in general, you can drop a few inches in bow length and maintain a smooth draw and the bow will be more efficient at the 25" draw than a longer bow, designed to draw 28-30 inches would be....

Good Luck!

PS...there are a BOAT load of good, custom, used bows out there that you can buy for 300-500... so dont "jump" on the savannah just yet. Its a decent bow though...what do they cost?

Savannah is range from 450-550.  Not many used.  I was think over going with a longbow with a good rep to start with.  Their  are so many customs out there I think it best learn from a good quality over the counter bow and research the custom market.  A lot to choose from.  After I know more of what I want from a bow I think it would be easier to order the custom.  I am searching for used but, not happy with what I find or am leary.  I plan to keep looking.  Thanks for the heads up in Centaur bows.  They look promising!

Well, there are a bunch of customs that are great bows.... so you may consider looking, then just posting the question in this thread and I or others can say, "hell yeah...thats a great bow" or something like that!

Good Luck
