Montana special hunt question
« on: September 03, 2010, 06:50:37 AM »
I am thinking about starting to put in for next years Montana Mule Deer special hunt.  I have never put in there.  I have checked out there website and am a little confused about what to purchase.  It seems to be a lot different then ours.  So can anyone fill me in on what I need to do.  And what does it cost, and do I pay it all up front or when and if I get drawn.  Is there specific areas that I should concentrate on?  I would like to start building some points up next year.  Not concerned about an elk tag over there.

Thanks
Maghunter

You need to first draw the Montana deer tag combo which will allow you to hunt any "general" deer area in the state.  Once you have drawn that, then you can apply for one of the special hunts for Mule deer area's.  Yes, you pay all the money up front and then they refund you when you don't draw.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

Read up on their Block Management program, they will send you maps of all the properties and point of contact numbers.  This way as soon as you learn that you have drawn the "general season" tag/license then you can apply for these properties to hunt on.  If you wait until it's too late (after you find out that you did not draw the "special hunt") it will be too late for you to gain access to any decent property.

hope it helps

I will do that...thanks.  Also, how many Deer B doe tags can an individual purchase.....4?  Seems like a high number to me.  It says up to 4, unless that means group.

may not matter to you but many bowhunters apply, are successful, then discover that they need additional archery hunting class certification to purchase tags. Montana, Alaska, 1st time Idaho bowhunters & other states have bowhunter education requirement that WA doesn't.

Nope, just gonna use rifle.  But that is some good info to know, especially for the fellow bowhunters

I am from Montana, I can help you out a bit. If you want a specific mule deer tag only there are certain units that you have to have a mule deer tag drawn through lottery. A general deer "A" tag will let you kill a whitetail or mule deer in most units..buck only. There are so trophy mule deer areas in SW Montana.. the biteroot valley. I think the units are 260 and 270. I have seen 30+ inch mulies come outta there. If you wanna see a lot of deer the east side of the state is your best option. There are big mule deer over there and you will be able to see a good number of deer and pick the one you want. If you want more information PM me your number, i got a copy of the regs i'll go through it with you and answer any questions.
