now this sounds pretty much like a coyote to me, but not entirelly sure. sometihng is hanging out in the blackberry thicket in my alley (granted its right against the woods) and has tried to grab my cat twice this week... we have lived here for years and had no problem, but... the cat somehow has survived twice. he is covered in bite marks too big to be from fighting with a coon or another cat (besides, we would have heard a coon/cat). he has a few chunks missing, but nothing too bad.. the bites seem to fit the bill of a coyote, but it has my currious if it isnt something else because dont coyotes generally not mess up? sounds to me like a young hungry or weak coyote, but we havent heard the pack in the woods in a few days....

to give an idea of where i live, my house is on the corner of a couldesac, with an alley going 3 houses back, straight into the woods.

i have heard it happen both times, and there was never any other noise beyond my cat sounding like somebody was trying to run it thru a meat grinder...

one friend says possible bobcat, another says a fox, im thinking young/old coyote... thought id ask the experts  :chuckle:
catch it. kill it. cook it. eat it.

Don't discount the idea of a raccoon....  my cat had a fight with a coon on my back deck.  The cat had a chunk of flesh missing from its hind quarter (butt) about the size of grown mans fist.  These same coons ended up killing two of the neighbors cats.  Hope you can find and exterminate the culprit!

Cougars will eat house cats.  There is a guy near Sequim that used to have a lot of cats on his property....then a much larger cat moved in and took care of all the house cats, dogs, coyotes, a few al pacas, some llamas, and sheep.  Then it moved on to the next row of farms and all their pets started disappearing too.

I would say it is just a dog, wild or a neighbors, because like you said a hungry coyote doesnt usually miss out on diner!

I would also say it could be a coon, I have seen those things get pretty narly!

Sounds like racoons to me.  A couple of years ago my buddy had a family of racoons living under his outbuilding.  One night when I was leaving his place, he turned on the driveway light and we saw the adult coons trying to corner the neighbor's cat.  They probably would have succeeded if we hadn't interrupted their stalk.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"
