new to hunting, a little confused
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:01:56 PM »
Just moved to WA a year ago, i am new to hunting and bow hunting looking to get set up this summer for the fall season.  I have purchased my deer/elk/bear/cougar combo license on line from the WDFW including a deer tag and an elk tag for Western WA.  What I confused about is that I thought there was a lottery for tags.  the deer tag and the elk tag were free and I chose archery as my weapon does that mean I will automatically get the deer and elk tag or does that mean I am now in the lottery?  I have looked all over the WDFW site and did a few searches of this forum and I couldn't find a definitive answer.
thanks,
Greg

No lottery. Buy your deer and elk tag over the counter. Pick your weapon and pick east or west for elk. Bear and cougar are the same no weapon choice though anything goes for those critters. We have special permits drawings for elk and deer also, not sure when the cut off is for those, want to say june 15
Hunting and Fishing is not what I do. But who I am...

the special permit drawings are for multi season or all season hunting right?

thanks by the way for the quick answer I am with family for the memorial day weekend in Texas and my brother in law (an avid hunter) insisted that elk for sure would be a lottery and possibly deer as well.  so by choosing the deer and elk tags when I purchased the license on line I will receive those tags in the mail along with the license?

thanks again,

I think the other question was answered so I'll try to answer this one. The short answer is no.

The multi-season permit is something you can apply for but it's separate from the special permits that Snowman mentioned. The special permits for deer and elk are for game management units that wouldn't otherwise be open for the general season that anybody with a tag can hunt. The best way to understand is to look at the 2008 Hunting Regulations. Look at pages 25 and 26 for the deer permits and pages 46 and 47 for the elk permits. The deer permits are all late season mule deer hunts and the elk are mostly units that have no general archery season at that time. The Margaret and Toutle units are permit-only elk hunting and don't have any general season hunts. It costs about $5 to apply for each species and the deadline is June 18th.

gfaherty3 Washington also has a point system. You apply for a Special Hunt. Apps are 5 bucks apiece? Application period is open right now. And if you don't get drawn you receive 1 Point. Make sure you apply for all 4 choices. Next year your points are squared and each year after until you draw. You can call me and I will explain everything to you. I sent you a private message with my cell #. ;)

Why all 4? What if he only wants to hunt one unit?

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies, I can't wait to continue my education, get geared up and and start practicing for the fall.
