Author Topic: Anyone with re-load data for 30-30 and 45-70 using cast bullets?  (Read 6874 times)

First off I am using IMR 3031 powder not going to go buy any other so that maybe a sticking point in getting new data.
Here is what I have:
30-30 cast 165 gr bullet can't find any data for 165 gr. but did for 150 and 170 using the Hodgdon site. I'd like to find a site that may have something on 165 gr. data. These bullets use no gas check.

45-70 cast 300 gr bullet did find data for it but want to see if there is more.

I did find a reference to Lee reloading manual but alas I do not own one. Maybe I'll fix that.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
 Scott

I have a little booklet regarding reloading the 45-70.   I'll see if I can dig it up tomorrow.

From "The Complete Reloading Manual for the 45-70 Government"

300 gr bullet  IMR 3031 starting load 51.0 grs - vel. 1664 no pressure listed but for "high pressure"
                                   max. load 56.0 grs - vel. 1929

300 gr bullet H4198 starting load 48.0 grs - vel. 1956
                             max. load 52.0 grs - vel. 2123

These may not be for cast bullets.  What bullet are you casting so I can look it up in more detail?

This manual was probably printed before Missouri bullets was around.

RCBS bullet 45-300-FN   IMR 4198  43.0 grn 1811fps - 45.0 grn 1894fps
                                    IMR 3031  53.0 grn 1712fps - 55.0 grn 1782fps

Lyman #457191 (293gr)   IMR 4198  34.5grn with 1/2 grn fiber wad 5/8"X1/4" thick 1613fps
                                                                               - 49.7 grn 2065fps (24,600 C.U.P.)
                           IMR 3031  51.0 grn 1695fps (16,500 CUP) - 59.0 grn compressed 2065fps
                                                                                                    (27,400 CUP)
This is as much as I've got.  Hope this helps, Ed

Thanks, you data for imr 3031 is real close to what I worked out for some crater rounds that I'll use in Montana for varmint hunting. We always take some guns that normal folks think are NOT meant for varmints. But I'll tell ya those guns give us the biggest laughs.

Glad I could help.

I have an old 1890 stamped 45-70 and was trying to work up some BP loads to deer hunt in WY.  I ended up not being able to get a good group with the load I had worked up once I got there so I ended up using the -06 on a nice 4X4 with eye guards.  That old trapdoor is a fun gun to shoot.  Someday I'll have time to try again with it, I hope.

Good shooting!
