Wow, that is a gorgeous bear.  It doesn't get much better than that.

Shot it just above the eye exited opposite side in the rear jaw.  Not the best when you want the skull, but that was the only shot presented.  Moral of the story ... take what you can get.

Besides it worked.

Halflife - you are in the right area.  Keep an eye on the weather as that area can change fast.  The snow up higher keeps the bears somewhat confined geographically.  The more area that is open, less bears per square miles.

Don't think the one we saw was the same, it was across the river.  We always like the view in the evening and went there just to glass.

Thought we had a wolf sighting sat night on the way back.  Two of us saw it in the road for just a second, it was all black, knee high bout the size of a half grown German Shepherd.  They said it was not a fox or coyote.  the only thing left is a yearling wolf.  This was just down the from where we saw the two a couple years back.

Keep after it and go as many times as you can - let us know how you do.

You know how many times you think the hunter has over estimated the size of his bear? Well I wonder if this bear is bigger than reported. How was it measured? I have killed 10 bears, some of them considerably bigger than average and this bear definately looks mighty big to me. Did you measure the girth of the bear's chest. There is a chart that can give a close weight estimate based off of the length and girth of the bear. Did you measure the width of the front pad? Width plus one is pretty close to squared hide size. Is the skull damaged such that it cannot be measured? Bear hunting fools like myself would love more size details. Also hopefully the hunter will send in the proper tooth for aging of the bear. It takes about a year and he will need to call as they no longer send out that info in the mail. Anyway that is a great bear and you all deserve my hearty congratulations on a hard hunt well done. Brian.

As has been said already, That is one of the best looking bears I've ever seen. I also agree with Rufous, that bear looks bigger than 6'1" to me. That thing is a pig! Congrats, definitely an animal to be proud of.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I'm not!

Yeah that.

I'm no expert on bears, but I've seen lots of pics and that is one of the biggest black bears I've seen.

Congrats. :brew:

Very cool.  The Wenaha is a beast.  Bailed off into it for 4 days once.

That's one hell of a bear! I'm sure you guys earned him on the way out. Congrats.

Oh yeah, I would've said bigger than 6'1" too.
