I hunt for pelts and the 40gr NBT works well for me out of my 22-204 and 52gr Speer HP varmint bullets work in my 223 and 5.6x50R Magnum. I just built a 22-250 but haven't done much with it yet. For the 6mm-204 and 243 I have started using Nosler 55gr Lead Free Ballistic tips, tried the 62gr VG's but they were producing big exits.  It's hard to find a fur friendly bullet in 6mm.  For the 250 Savage I'm going to try some 75gr X bullets that I have squirelled away.

I'm not a pelt saver so I like bullets that leave big holes.  :)

I've used Nosler BT's, Amax and Vmax in both .22cal and .243 all 3 leave nice big holes for those bang, flop, dead, shots.....

Hey AWS what is a 22-204?  Is it similar to a 222 rem mag?

Basically it turns out to be a 222 Rem Mag Improved  The shoulder is moved forward the body slightly straightened and the shoulder angle changed to 30 degrees and by using 204 Ruger brass there is no fire forming or custom dies needed.  Capacity wise it is just a little larger than than the 223AI.  Plus you can just re-chamber a 223 barrel and there is no set back needed.  I do mine by hand and don't even take them off the action.  Loaded COL is 2.41 in my rifle so it is a little long for a Sako 416 or CZ 527.  I'm running 40gr NBT's at 3900-3950 out of a 22" sporter weight barrel and won the WWPHA club shoot last year with it.

I have rifles in 22-204, 6mm-204 and 25-204.

Out off all the bullets Ive wacked yote with the 40 bt and 52 amax seem to leave the smallest or no exit hole, if you hit bone or at short range 50yds or less the 40 gr are nasty. You do need to look at how the bullet is made some vmax and bt are flat base, You really should worry about what bullet is accurate out of your gun over highest bc.

AWS do by chance know what the case capacity is on your 22-204?  It can't be much more than a few tenths more than the .223Ack. Imp.

The 223ai is 31water grains with a 40degree shoulder.  The 222Rem mag. AI is 31.7water grains.  A straight 204ruger is a tick under 31water grains so the 22-204 with less shoulder angle than the 222Rem mag AI would have to be reallllllly close to the same as the .223ai.

That must be a pretty hot load your using to get 3900-3950fps out of a 22in. tube and no real measurable gain in case capacity than a .223AI  Would love to know what powder and how much you are using to get those #'s

120 gr Nosler BT out of my 7mag.  Close range, surprisingly minimal damage.  However at long range, thats another story.

I will go out on the limb and say that .204 ruger is the best coyote round if you plan on selling the skins to the fur market. I reload 35grain Bergers pushing just under 4000fps. In the past I've shot .223, .222, 22-250, .17Rem, and .243. My shots have been anywhere from 10 yards to 350 yards. 99.9% of the time you have a .20 caliber entry hole and no exit and their insides are jello. Even on a poor shot placement I've recovered ALL my coyotes, but most of the time they just tip over. My 2 cents.

Predator Guy said keep it simple. I agree! Inexpensive ammo your gun likes is a great way to go. I use 100gr Hornaday interlocks from my .243 and that works great for me.
