They forgot to mention the old way we learned to know for sure.  When encountering bears, if you climb a tree a hungry black bear will climb the tree after you.  A grizzly will push it over.   :chuckle:

Also you can tell from the droppings.  The Grizzly's crap smells like peperspray and is full of those bells they sell at REI. 

Seriously though, In North America virtually every case of black bears attaching humans has been determined to be predatory.  Meaning the bear was going to eat the person it attached.  The way to keep a black bear from attacking you is to either shoot it in the vitals or don't look like food (I like to yell "Hey Bear!" if it's not hunting season)

I'm not 100% sure on the statistic for Grizzly bear attacks but my understanding is that the vast majority of he attacks were territorial but not quite all.  This seems to suggest that to avoid Grizzly attacks one might leave the area and not confront the bear.  If the bear seems intent on attacking being aggressive and fighting back may be the wrong move.
