« on: October 31, 2011, 12:29:04 PM »
What is everyones experience in past years for when the whities rut over NE?  When do you think they will rut this year?

It always varies a little. I usually see the most daytime rut movement between 10-20 Nov.

From what I have experienced it is usually slowing down by that point though I have seen some rut activity as late as early January. That being said I have killed my two largest bucks on 29 Nov.

Neither were chasing. One was killed in the first few minutes of shooting light and the other was killed in the last few minutes of shooting light. However, I had witnessed a lot of rut activity the week leading up to those days.

I am currently in Kettle Falls and will be here until I kill a buck I want or the season closes. We are staying at the Grandview Inn and RV Park. It is the closest hotel to the bridge crossing the Colombia. We are staying in an RV. I have never stayed in their rooms.

Thanks, I'll look them up and give them a call.
What stage do you think the rut is in?  I'll be huntin up at Gallo Springs.  So far I've heard of a couple guys up there getting does, but no bucks yet.

From what I saw in the Gallo areas during MR late, that may be all they get there. that area seems to have been cleaned out in the last 2 years.
Didn't see 1/4 the deer in that area that I used to.

I haven't been in the stand for the past week but I talked to other hunters and they are telling my the rut has kicked in recently.  I can tell you that I had most daylight movement of bucks between 10-20 Nov. (like I mentioned before) and the past few days it has slowed down significantly.  I personally think the primary rut peaked around the 18th and is now tailing off. That being said....I believe food sources will be the best place to hunt in the very near future.

I hunted from the 10-18 and I saw a lot of daylight buck movement.

Thanks guys, i'm hoping we have a opportunity at some bucks, but filling the freezer is the priority here, maybe nail a turkey too.
I'm going to try to do a little calling and rattling even if the rut doesn't seem to be hot, i've been pretty excited about being able to hunt the rut.
If there are plenty of does and the rut is at the tail end, the bucks gotta be around somewhere.

Good luck on your hunt. I am sure you will have no problem filling the freezer.

Didn't see 1/4 the deer in that area that I used to.

Part of that is due to the snow festivals we had back in 07 and 08. the deer numbers aren't there. I spent the weekend up and didn't see many deer. Had a few does bedded in the back and had 1 nice buck cruising Sat. morning. He was the only one that came thru. I guess the neighbor up the road had told someone he had a 180 class whitetail on his place!  :chuckle:  Hope it wasn't either of you! The Buck I was hunting during the late rifle season is still there I saw his tracks this weekend while I was out calling coyotes.
