My 2012 Trail Cam Thread, UPDATE....short lived
« on: January 01, 2012, 11:56:29 AM »
Well, here we are. 2012 is here already. I have changed up my location a bit from last year and will be doing a one year trail cam log. The first question folks are going to ask is "What is the string?" Looks like the property was getting some survey work done. I'll have to contact the property manager and make sure the area is not going to get logged. So, anyway, back on track. I have a Bushnell Trophy cam in a bear box. It is what will hopefully be my little honey hole. To start the year off I hiked up, changed out the card, and made sure to get at least one pic to start it off. Happy New Year. I'm excited to see what the year will bring.

The string is probably from a "hip chain". These are used by foresters to measure distance. I used to use them occasionally in the woods as a land surveyor but since handheld GPS units became available we pretty much quit using the hip chains.

This is what they look like:

Thanks. I've had the survey guy on cam (and his dogs) before. I'll be shooting the parcel manager for the property an email tomorrow double checking the logging activity. Last time we spoke he told me no logging in this area for a couple of years. I did get some deer on cam from the last week or so but no real good pictures. Besides...this is 2012...last week was like....so totally...like 2011 you know.

From a string box for sure.  I know I like to have my units layed out 2-3 years before harvest....you're probably good to go for 2012.  We have run a few trail cams through processors!  Some people don't understand which side of the paint is getting cut!!

We used to use them from time to time when setting up timber sales to get a semi accurate measurement of propsed road location distances. Looks like you have a sasquach on your picture. :chuckle:

Well when you figure out a new location ill be looking forward to following your thread, just put mine out last Friday, going to try just setting up on a heavy game trail instead of baiting this year, all I got was bear last year on wetcob, a deer blend, apple and salt blocks, and fresh apples.  Good luck on getting some good pics.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Thanks....I'll find something.

This also just goes to show that if you take the time to learn a property, respect it, talk to the management/owners of it...that kind of stuff....you can hunt/scout/trail cam safely. Who knows. If I had not already chatted with the property manager and shown that I was a responsible hunter last year I may not have found out the logging schedule so quickly.

Anyway......I'm a bit bummed of course but I have time to pull the cam. Guess I have a good reason to go put some miles in.

Yep...there were back up there just the other day...I think it was on the 2nd. Waved at the camera. After emailing with the property manager I figured I better not wait and boogied up there yesterday evening. Made it from the gate to the cam in 21 minutes....I was moving!
