Need Help With Alaska
« on: March 09, 2012, 09:05:17 PM »
Well I was just told by my dad that I needed to start planning on a moose and a caribou hunt for next years every thing paid for. So the question's are what guide would you guys recommend and should we do a fully guides moose hunt or just a drop camp.

You might check Willow Air.  I did a drop camp caribou hunt many years ago with them.  They seem to focus more on moose now, more money in it probably.

I had a customer this year go with Alaska Statewide Guides.  He came back with a really nice caribou.

Keep in mind timing is everything when hunting Caribou.  If you hunt them in velvet be prepared to treat the velvet in the field.  Do your reasurch on treatment.

Two moose for two guys and two caribou would be a feat. If you can afford it guided would be the experience of a lifetime as you would have higher likely hood of both getting animals and someone else to do logistics. Probably looking 10000-16000 per for moose plus transport etc.
Take your kids into the outdoors. They are our future. Support conservation by joining and participating in future through NRA, SCI, RMEF, Wild Sheep or any of the other great organizations.

A moose drop camp is fine in Alaska, depending on where you are getting dropped off at. I do not know how long you plan on being there, but a good solid moose hunt is usually a 10 day hunt.

If you tag out early you have to have plans with your guide/ride to be doing fly overs to be able to land to get meat out of there.

For doing a caribou hunt also, that is an easier hunt and a lot less days.

Lyon really need to set your budget then plan accordingly. For a drop hunt I would look at 40 mile air. For a guided hunt Pacific mountain Guides are top notch. Shooting 4 animals is doable but a lofty goal. NW Alaska will offer you the best shot at all four.

Hey Turkey Slayer,  check out this site, http://outdoorsdirectory.com/index.php.  Its a lot like hunt WA only for AK.  Tons of good info and good folks on there.  Good luck on your hunt, sounds like a hunt of a lifetime to me

You might want to try bowsite.com and look under the guide section.  I know you probably are not bow hunting but they have reviews of guides up there that might give you an idea of which guides are good and bad (just another tool for you to use).  If every thing goes as planned I will be up there too for moose.  Can't wait, and Good Luck!
