I have a point in bull elk, quality elk and buck deer.  This year I'll go in the draw with 2 points. Which as I understand it gives me 4 tickets in the drawing per catigorie.  The question is what should I put in for to stand a chance of drawing out.  I'm looking for meat and am willing to go to a rifle and shoot a cow.  I know people that have drawn out on premium bull e/s rifle tag with 0 points.  Is the average points used accurate?  Should i go by them for how many points im gonna need?  I will probably not draw.  Any other lucky hunters out there ever draw with very few points?

Sounds like you need to pray a little. Yes people do draw with a few points but not very often...

all depends on if your lucky or not...

I would look for the units with the best odds and go that route if you want to have a chance at pulling a tag. If it were me, I would put in for a good hunt, knowing that I didn't have a good chance and just view it as building up your points. There are plenty of animals to be had during general season, especially if you are a meat hunter.  :twocents:

With 2 points in the draw, apply for everything and go for the gusto.  Leave no 2nd, 3rd....choice blank.  No elk antlerless points?
Your chances are slim, but hey, someone's got to get the tags.

I am sure almost everyone on here knows somebody who "got lucky" with very few points.  I had a student in my class last year who drew a bull moose tag with only 2 (same girl drew a youth bull elk tag with only 2 points as well).  I wouldn't count on anything though.  At this point, you are probably looking at just putting in and "building points" with the rest of us.
I have 12 points and have never been drawn for an elk tag.  Not that I am bitter... :chuckle:

I agree with all that's been said, and yes, lots of people get lucky every year and draw good hunts with very few points. To answer the question about "average points," it pretty much means nothing, as far as your chances of drawing. If there were 2,500 applicants for 50 permits, and the average points was 2 for those who drew, it means only that and nothing more. It does not mean that if you have 2 points you will draw.

Yes, you statiscally stand a better chance of drawing an antlerless tag due to the sheer volume of tags available.

cannot win if you do not play, but why would you apply for a MF Antlerless, when you are a bowhunter, and already have antlerless options ?

East side, west-side,  :dunno: as long as your hunting...
I met a guy last year during Archery season, first year Archery, second year hunting period.
He had spent the year before hanging around camp with some guys (MF) and enjoyed himself, but saw no animals.
Drew a multi-permit and was after any legal...
I dragged him out and showed him how to Archery Elk hunt...
One day was enough for him, even though I put him within 50 of a 5X5, 15 of a 4X3, and 30 from a cow, the miles covered and the climb out of "the hole" were too much  :chuckle:

As far as I am concerned, ANY legal Elk is "Glory" just check harvest reports.
I am a Cow/Spike killer, meat on the ground !!

Now that I came back to the west side, 3 points+ or cows !!

Never count yourself out. The last two guys that i knew who drew Dayton had 2 and 4.  I didnt draw last year with 12.  That is what sucks and what is great about our system.  If you just want meat, spend more time on finding a general area and just call a draw tag a blessing if it happens

Finaly some optimism to get me going!!!  I put in for a good unit but easy to draw cause of our awesome system we have here!  I never put in for antlerless last year.  What's up with the bull elk permits don't seem as good as quality elk permit choices?  I have a point in it so I'll get another this year.  Might as well.  I know right where my big bull will be waiting in both my choices for quality if I draw I will stick a good one!
